What is Your Collecting Direction?

Dimeguy, I know what you mean. I've managed to acquire pieces of "future" collections...Indian cents, war nickels, and Franklins (my secondary collection).

Swish, just looked at your list...pretty cool about your number 2, the coin your family held.

 

Normally my direction would be exonumia. I really like collecting
coin club medals/tokens and military tokens. But all I see these days
is "buy my junk." So I've been dabbling a bit in world coins. I just
bought a 1977 Chile 10 peso coin showing Winged Liberty reaching
upwards and breaking her chains. It's probably an AU50 and I paid,
with shipping, $2.64. I bought some Brazil stainless steel coins and
Canadian Polar bear Toonies. So, I think the direction I'm going is
anarchy but I don't care. There's too much world stuff I like and I'm
not passing because they don't fit any theme. If I need a theme I'll
call it my Anarcho Now collection.

 

Its all Ike dollars for me but that doesn't mean that I wont buy an eye appealing coin of any series....

 

I'm all over the map when it comes to my direction in numismatics. However, my main focus is assembling a circulated Peace Dollar set right now. I'm almost half way through. I'm also assembling a State Quarters and Sacagawea/Native American set using only P & Ds from Mint sets. Speaking of Sacs/NAs, I've just completed, or should I say, up to date, on collecting all the proofs in air-tites. Just noticed the other day that I had accidentally bought the 2011 Proof 3 times! LOL Not sure why I kept re-buying that coin.

However, paper notes have caught my attention here lately as I picked up my first Confederate note. I may start going going after some of those.

 

Now, every time I deposit a paycheck, I get 1 roll of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. With these circulated coins, the plan is to fill my Whitman folders:
1909-current Lincoln pennies
1938-current Jefferson nickels
1946-current Roosevelt dimes
1946-current Washington quarters

I might fill in some of the gaps by visiting the coin shop, but I don't really plan on it.

My heart is leaning more towards saving money to collect the following:
2013 glow-in-the-dark dinosaur quarters released by the Royal Canadian Mint (for my son)
2009 Lincoln Chronicles Set (these coins are absolutely beautiful)
2013 American Silver Eagle (I don't really care about the mint mark, more importantly the year, because this will become an annual thing)
2013 Theodore Roosevelt Coin Cover (he's my third favorite president)
2013 Uncirculated Mint Set (for my son, but this is also the way we're ensuring that we get the president coins, and everything else that's current. I might also get silver and proof sets because of Theodore Roosevelt--it all depends on what the Mint offers)

Maybe, just maybe if I have any extra cash, the 2012 5oz versions of Hawaii and Acadia.

 

Quality coins with nice eye appeal that I like. I am planing on buying maybe 3 or 4 coins in 2013.

 

Well, let's see--it goes in a few directions, but mostly Morgan Dollars (obviously). I tend to specialize in coins--toners of whatever date (have multiple coins of the same date with vivid toning), and PL and DMPL coins. Not going for any full Morgan series, as I have had that twice before and sold it. Have some really good dates also, but most of those are "safe deposit" coins. Also into halves--Kennedy Halves -have the full set in Danscon in gem condition. ALso Ike dollars--full Dansco set in gem condition, and many Franklin Halves--especially toners. The only non-MS coins that I own are the two Morgan key dates, and they are in XF condition (1893s and 1889cc). Also like modern commemoratives in very high MS or PF. condition--either 69 or 70.

 

I'm really trying to work on my half eagle date set from 1795 to 1807 but I've only got 1 out of 11 coins so far. I have a long time between these purchases for obvious reasons so I spend my time also trying to get a complete set of wheat cents from circulation. Also I buy a nice random coin once in a while that peaks my interest.

 

I rotate amongst the following:

Sogdian
Byzantine
Hepthalite
Sassanid
Chinese cash and earlier
Diocletian era Roman
Kyrenaika
Nabatea
Arab-Byzantine and Arab-Sassanid
19th century Mexican
Early Thai coins

Kind of my major things I look for, but always love to get something new. I still dabble a little in US coins when I get bored.

 

FRANKLINS!!

For slabbed Franklins I prefer NGC and will typically go for the grade right before the huge price jumps, or anything with really nice eye appeal.
And I will usually pick up anything raw I can find that is in gem bu.

 

My main focus is still toned Morgan dollars. Though in the past few months I have begun to look at other series too. Particularly the toned copper coins, I'm also collecting world coins that catches my eye. And while I first started I was going for quantity over quality I find myself changing that now.

 

I just about finished my 1909-Date Lincoln cent(where's a rolled up VDB-s when ya need it?)

I have lots of single coins I've picked up throughout my days collecting, but I think I'm going to start working on 2 different books. I think I'm going to do the Modern Commemorative Dollars I believe starts in 1983? I was also thinking about starting a Commemorative Half dollar series starting in 1892, I know some of these will be $$, but I think it'll be a good book to have finished someday, not to mention how beautiful these coins are(Oregon Trail anyone?!?!?)

 

Right now completing my set of Roman Empresses Lucilla & Crispina. I just need 1 for crispina and 5 for Lucilla.

Aside from that I just buy what I like when it comes to other ancients in all fields. If the coin speaks to me and it has a decent price then I buy it.

As far as a focus on U.S. I have none since I am done with U.S. coins I need/want.

World coins is same as ancients, whatever I see/like and is affordable.

 

I'm like a little kid in a candy shop right now (maybe it's because of the wine--Happy Thanksgiving!)

I'll read someone's post and think, "Oh, I like that one!" and then another post and think, "Oh! I like that too!"

In the last few months, I picked up a caballito, a 1921 dos pesos, some junque silver, upgraded my from rolls lincoln collection, I got my sf ase set, I upgraded some of my 2 dollar bills collection, got a green eagle at a show, picked up a couple of condor tokens, I sold some mexican silver, a 1917 legal tender one and some pres dollars, two dollar bills and ikes.

Wheres my collection going? targets of oppurtunity, proof sets are sort of low right now, I will probably finish them up (1953 to date) pretty shortly.

I don't really have a direction any longer. Been looking for about two years now. It gave me time to look back on what I have collected.

 

I like old gold with very low survival #s, around 400 or less is nice.

Any classic coins with cool toning.

Will probably get 6-8 coins at the most in 2013, quality over quantity for me. I have 4 coins on my wish list and I'll take my time and purchase the ones that are right for me. Might take a couple of years though....

 

I'm exactly the same. I love old gold and good looking toning. I'd rather spend a lot of money on a few coins than a little money on a lot of coins.
