Hello, I wanted to invest in some new ancient coins book, I want something with Roman and or English coinage Spink emailed me with there new edition but I am unsure as I already have spink 2011. I was wondering if anyone knew a decent guide that will help me identify my coins easily? Cheers Frank
Aorta by Suarez has lots of pics. For more overall Roman coins, I recommend Sear's 1988 edition of Roman Coins and their Values if only 1 book.
Sear 1988 is a good book, I have it, but coin values are unreliable, after 24 years. But if our friend need a book for easy and quick identification of most important Roman coins, Republic and Empire, and he is not very interested in values, Sear 1988, even today, is a great choice :thumb: petronius :smile
I am not worried about coin values its just I have issues with identifying some coins, so I think I shall ask my girlfriend to get me this for Christmas!!
Here you go. Though I should note that while I have a copy, I've found online resources, like Wildwinds, Tesorillo, and the RIC spreadsheets here more useful in most situations.
1988 Sear is good for the price which tends to be low because it is so old and many were printed. The current multivolume Sear's are better but not cheap. I have an even older one of the series (gray cover) which is also worth the $10 or so they sell for. 1988 is better but popular. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001G2N5EO/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used I'd go for Van Meter at the original list price of $35 but they are not worth the used prices of some I have seen. Someone might need to write a new beginner book but anything big enough to be useful will be too expensive to sell well so online is the best deal. Writing books seems to be a good way of losing money so I look for fewer of them in the future.
