I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks are the top ten coins. I'm leaving that vague purposely. Top ten coins for what? You tell me.
Hmmmm, ok I'll give this a try I'll start by saying that these are at present my 10 favorite coins in my possesion not the "best" condition or most "valueable" though that is considered in selecting them as my favorites. 1st is easy that my 1857 FE cent probably g8-f12 2nd would probably be my newly arrived AU55 1890-p Morgan dollar VAM-15a (in anacs slab) 3rd is my beat up circulated 2001 ASE that I use as a pocket peice. (was tossed in with 5-6 others for $6 because of a scratch instead of $8 that was the price at the time) 4th would be my nicely toned 2001 ASE (this one would grade MS68 easy maybe even 69) 5th back to cents with my recently verdi-cared 1828 corinette(sp) large cent 6th takes us back to morgans for my 1885-p VAM2 7th 1966 DDO SMS Kennedy Half dollar (easily AU possibly MS62) 8th and the only forgien coin to make this list my Canadain 2004 tiger swallowtail half dollar 9th back to Cents with my 1876 IH penny this one probably grades vf/xf 10th and last we stick to the IH pennies with a toss up between my 1859 and 1860 both in the vf/xf range (full liberty ribbons on both) Not a list that will ever make me rich, but these are the coins I actualy take out just to look at and enjoy most often.

Everyone will have a different method of qualifying their top 10. Monetary value, sentimental appeal, historical significance, rarity, etc. Actually the OP didn't make it 100% clear if the top 10 was for coins we actually owned, or simply coins we wanted (wish list). For this post I will assume it's for coins we actually own. In terms of making a top 10 list, for me it's all about eye appeal. So here are my top 10 "most beautiful" colorfully-toned coins as scored in my Flash Index system. (Note that the Flash Index is a method that "objectively" scores the visual appeal of colorfully toned coins). A perfect Flash Index score is 10.0 and I have yet to acquire a coin that scored a perfect 10, but I bet they are out there. Any Flash Index score above 9.0 signifies "Gold Level" toning. Between 8.0 and 8.9 is "Silver Level"; and 7.0 to 7.9 is "Bronze Level". So these are all monster "Gold Level" toned coins posted in descending order, so my "most beautiful" coin is at the top.
You have some of the most beautiful coins I've ever seen. All of these are stunning and I remember many more that you have posted in the past that haven't made this list. I absolutely love looking at any coins that you post because they are all amazing.
Yup right here. Many years ago at a yard sale I bought a dozen or so beat up Barber halves at $4 each. Then I started picking up singles when I saw them. It took a few years but I completed the set of Barber halves in a Dansco. The 1892-O and 1892-S are in slabs [NGC and PCGS]. The 1896-S was tough to find. I got one on Teletrade in an ANACS [cleaned, details] holder and cracked it out to finish the set. Then not knowing what I was really getting into I started a set of Barber dimes in an old Library of Coins album. I am stuck with just 3 more to finish: 1895-O, 1896-O and 1897-O. Have been stuck with those 3 needed for at least two years now. Never started the Barber quarters and don't plan to either.
The only ones that I have in VF or better are: 1892 O-- AU 1897 O- XF 1908 S- VF 1894 P-VF-25 That is one tough list! For my self: I'd like to get 10 different Overton #'s for the 1795 Half dollar. Or any R-7's that I can afford or cherry pick.
Another tough set. I have been working on an AU set for about 10 years. my best: 1895 O is only a VG 1896 O only a Fine 1897 O I picked up an Unc in Milwaukee in 2007. Altho I have an 1897 O in VF-35, slabbed, by ANACS. A real VF+ Good luck.
1893s Morgan in XF40 1889CC Morgan in XF 45 1894 Morgan MS 64 1893cc Morgan MS 64 1892CC Morgan MS 64 1998s Kennedy SMS in SP 70 1995s Kennedy silver in PR 70 1885CC Morgan in MS 64 1881CC Morgan in MS 63 1879CC Morgan in MS 64 I have had pictures up of all of them before. I treated them as rarest and most valuable, not necessarily my favorite coins, as there are lots of less costly coins that I love truly, such as unique toned coins.
This is my Top 10 today. It will undoubtedly be different tomorrow. It's like picking your favorite son or daughter. I love them all. This is just a good cross section.
1. Lincoln cent because it is so ubiquitous in many aspects of everyday life. 2. Washington quarter because it's almost as universal as the Lincoln cent and very useful for vending machines. 3. 1933 Double Eagle because not many survived. 4. Buffalo Nickel because it depicted a minority that did not have the right to vote (and the buffalo is pretty cool too!). 5. State quarters because they gave a much needed boost to the numismatic community and hobby. 6. 1807 Rothchild Draped Bust silver dollar because it is such a great example of a beautiful design. 7. Large cents because they helped facilitate everyday commerce. 8. Draped Bust cents because it is, in my opinion, the most beautiful design on any U.S. coin. 9. 1932D quarters in MS condition because their rarity exists because collectors and the hobby ignored them for years. 10. American Silver Eagle because the walking liberty design is very attractive and each American should own at least one.
I wish I had a chain cent & I too like the no stars dimes. :thumb: I've got some experience with 1912-S in MS. You may not find a 12-S in PL but enjoy the hunt.
Yes it is one tough list, and I have no idea how I missed the 1898-O. That has been on my list for a while. I wish I had one 1795 50c let alone 10 different marriages!
I will give the top ten coins that I currently own in no particular order. 1877 IHC 1909S IHC 1895O Barber Dime 1901B Swiss Two Franc 1928 Peace Dollar 1893CC Morgan Dollar 2009DC Thick Mint Mark ASE 1892O Barber Half Dollar 1886 V-Nickel 1914-D Lincoln Penny
