Hello folks! I have collected coins for over 25 years, but not much in the way of paper money. I recently came across this $50 star note from 1934 and was wondering if it carries any premium over its face value or if I should just spend it. Thanks for your input!
It's possible you may find a collector that will pay more than face, but between the mark on the back, the stains, and rough overall condition, I'd say it's a spender. Book value is $100 for a VF example.....but yours has issues.
Whether premium or not, I say keep it unless you need the money, then I would say try selling or trading it her at CT for a week before spending it.
Bring it into your lcs. Im sure you will be able to sell it for at least a small premium maybe even more.
Its still a nice note despite the condition. I agree with others, either keep it in your collection or put it in the BST for another collector.
Thanks for all the input folks! I appreciate it. I'll take it to the local shop and see what they think. After all, if I can get $75 or so, thats more I'll have for coins!
B&M might offer $50-$60. $75 seems more inline with what currency specialists will pay online. Depending on the series rarity, a private collector may offer even more. As I PMed you, I personally sell oddities to the currency specialists. It might get me 25-50% less than I get direct to a private party, but the specialists cover sipping costs and require no marketing on my part.
Well I took it to the local shop and the guy said he'd go like 15-20 bucks over face. I figured I'd try ebay before settling on that. Bidding opened last night at $89.99. It is a 5-day auction so we'll see what she fetches!
How many bids did it take to get to that price? How many bidders were involved? Inquiring minds want to know.
