Hello All, I joined about a week ago and I collect the above areas (see title). My wife is from Latin America & perhaps that started my interest in Latin American coins. I like the variety of designs issued by the "early" Latin American Republics. These coins are very hard for me to find and it represents a good balance between my limited checkbook and finding the stuff to buy. I'm trying to learn Spanish (but am not too good at it) and like to learn about the history behind the coins. I have what one dealer describes as a "humoros website":bart: meaning I guess that it's sort of crude since I did it myself and it clearly doesn't look professional. However I enjoy hacking at it and am trying to research the history behind the stuff. The link is here: www.coinsandhistory.com There's nothing for sale (except reference books) on it: it's just a coin info site. On Ancients these are a lot more expensive than my other area and I can only make an occasional stab at buying a pretty [to me] coin once in a while. I have very few Greek (incl. Asia Minor) but many more Roman. I can never come close to even having a representative collection as this area is very expensive. This year I bought a total of 7 Ancient coins including one for my neice which will be for her 1st confirmation in 2013. Of these new coins, 3 are Greek & 4 are Roman- including the one used for my avatar. Like most here I love to yak about coins and could use input about stuff: what to collect & etc. Should I keep my concentration in Roman or should I expend even more into Greek? I guess I've been doing this as in the previous 5 years I don't recall getting any Greek tho I did bid on some. Also any sugestions on how to improve my website would be appreciated since I just did it myself. correction 2 are Greek & 5 are Roman, I knew that was too many Greeks. Still 2 is a big improvement over zero from prev years.
Hi, welcome, I enjoyed your coins on the site and collect Latin mainly Chilean coins myself. I have a few latin coins in my albums.
Welcome. You sound a lot like me. I collect ancients and coins from Thailand since my wife is from there. I agree that early South American coins are wonderful. I have always meant to collect more, but of course I cannot collect EVERYTHING.
I am very interested in coins of Chile and always kick myself for not buying a decent "dos bandaras" 8E when I had the chance. I saw 3 of them in good grades over the years and put up a real fight for a 4th one. Also in another auction I saw one of the latter milled 8E's with the date and month on the edge, it was cheap, but at the time I was very stingy.
I guess this means the 10 Pesos issued in the 1980's? I need to get a better reference book on Chile. I do much better with Argentina, as due to the currency crisis, they are really exporting old collector coins. However from Chile I've been not able to get anything.
Unfortunately I am unacquainted with Thai coins. My Dad served in WW-II and he went to Thailand immediately after the war and had a high esteem for the people. If you know what you're doing I'd recommend getting some rarities as Thailand could really develop. For example, at auctions decent Chinese coins bring fantastic sums, & I recall other SE Asian coins selling for a lot at Heritage auctions. Thus maybe it's too late? I've been able to assemble semi-respectable collections of Peru, Colombia, & Argentina. Brazil is definately much tougher.
I know a famous Chilean numistmatist who has authored some books on the Colonial era. I really need to find some good reference books on Chile.
That has become my policy since losing the 3 Chilean Dos Bandaras. For the past 2 years I've been more agressive pricewise. My wife was very upset when I bought the Claudius II which is now my avatar but I really don't regret it too much.
The 10 pesos coins issued in the 80s are still in circulation and are very common. The nice libertad coins are the large 28 mm copper nickel 10 pesos issued late 70s to 1980 (KM 210)
