I found this coin a while back and am wondering if anyone here has any idea of what it's worth. Here are some pictures:
With it not being a carved piece, I would think that the value would be minimal. Perhaps a couple of dollars or so. The carved ones can command some big money if they are truly ornate and by a known artist.
All the Landis pieces have some value now - he passed away a few years ago and of course there will be no more of his work. He was actually very talented at his trade.
True, not carved in the traditional since, where each nickel was individually carved. But Landis did hand carve the dies that stuck these nickels. As was mention, Landis is collectable and has a following. He made several different hobos and they are stuck over actual nickels. I’ve seen some designs sell for more than $30, but not sure about this one – there are currently none on eBay.
Thank you Joe. I was just going to post that myself. That hobo token being discussed is struck over a Jefferson nickel. They originally sold for $5, and now go for around $20-30 on Ebay when you can find them... even with me being alive.
Welcome to the forum. Please remember that the rules do not allow self-promotion except through a personal URL in the signature space, and Buy/sell/trade information must be in the correct part of the classified forum. read the sticky there. Jim
Sorry, I don't have anything for sale, and nor do I need to promote myself. I don't believe I was doing that in my post. He asked what it was worth. Somebody said I was dead. I'm just trying to provide accurate information. I might add I do NOT have any for sale.
Thank you for the clarification. Again , welcome to the forum, and I am glad you are still among the living. Jim
Interesting... I wasn't aware that there were any "hobo" type nickels that were restrikes. Similar to what Daniel Carr does?
Sorry for posting of your demise Ron, I heard that years ago as the reason GMM stopped. I think that rumour is old enough that it was RCC or something. That said, I have lots of GMM pieces, even one I deliberately made a pocket piece. Love my 1793, 1794 and 1799 examples best since I like large cents and the 1799 will probably never find a way into my collection like the earlier dates have.
Scottish, don't feel bad. I got a laugh out of it. I used carry a few of those around as pocket pieces myself. I think they look better after they turn brown. They don't look right when they're bright red. The hobo tokens were a series I started shortly after I started making hobo nickels to give my customers a less expensive alternative to trying to acquire my hand carved nickels. In 2000, we switched from over-striking Jeff nickels to doing them in coin silver. I've since bumped up the quality a few notches on my hand carved nickels, but I don't think I am allowed to show them on this forum.
i like art,but i don't like it on real coins that can't be replaced.i guess on the bright side though it will make the ones left worth more whether the artist and his style fall from favor or not.
Apparently not. I tried on the "Auction listing" and the "For Sale" portion. Perhaps I haven't been a member long enough? And when I tried to post on on this thread, I was blocked and immediately got a warning from our moderator. I guess that means I also can not talk about my recent interview for the position of Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. It could be interpreted as "self promotion".
I don't want to speak for the mods, but I believe there may be some flexibility. I know I would like to see them. Just shoot them a PM and ask for their guidence on what you want to do. Mike
The Sale sections are for members with 10 posts or more. I am sure you can understand the need to prevent spam ads on the forum. I would welcome any comments from you sir. You have first hand knowledge making these things, and I am sure many here would love to hear your thoughts. You are a true expert and are very much desired here. Just don't let the trolls get you.
Thank you, medora, I thought it may be something like that, and I understand the need to monitor spam. So, I guess I can make about seven more posts so I will be eligible for posting photos. Like I said earlier, I don't have a big desire to promote myself, since I have all the work I care for. I've always enjoyed "show and tell", and ANY of that COULD be interpreted as self promotion. I guess I'll just go for it, and if you see something that crosses the line, then censor as you see fit.
