I'd crack it. It's details grade so what's the point of keeping it in a holder? Bust that baby out and put it in an album.
Though I prefer my coins slab free, I agree with others in that if you aren't planning to put it in an album, I'd just leave it as is. Guy
Thanks for your opinions. I wish TT would handle slabs better. This is not the 1st slab I've gotten from them that wasn't scuffed and scratched.
The scratch across the hand on the obverse is the reason that it got the grade even though it looks like very old damage.
The entire obverse appears to have pretty significant scuffing going on from 8:00 to 2:00 with the most obvious injuries being on the lower third of the coin. It is likely this is why, or at least partly why, the coin was noted as scratched. I doubt PCGS or NGC would grade this problem free. Regardless, this is a $40 or so coin in a problem free holder so I would not understand the possible motivation for submitting it.
id just leave it be unless you need it in a type set or something... the slab isnt hurting it or anything lol
Highly doubt it was TT that mishandled the slab. Remember most get sent to them by collectors and dealers already slabbed.
I would agree, Tom. My first impression was also the same "Why re-submit this coin?" question when I realized that Detecto doesn't mention doing that. That means that it is also possible that he is asking if he should make the coin a raw coin again and free it from it's plastic tomb. I would be in favor of doing that. IMHO A lower grade relatively common date coin in a details holder just doesn't serve much of a purpose. It is a better education tool and likely much more enjoyable raw.
Detecto's fourth post in this thread contains, in part- "would PCGS slab it Problem Free?" That is why I addressed the cost of slabbing this at PCGS or NGC.
Amen to that. Most slabs from them have issues. I usually only buy from them (and e-Bay) but I'm sure the other places are just as bad. As was stated TT more than likely did not do this - they seem to pack their stuff pretty well, indicating to me that they take care of items in their posession. They (TT) will re-slab it for you, for $10. I did it on a Morgan a while back. They even refunded my shipping. More than refunded - it cost about 10 bucks to send and I got a $25 TT gift cert. If you can tell the slab is really bad before it's shipped, they can re-slab it before they send it to you. Still $10, but worth it to me as I've seen some really nice coins in some sad slabs.
