Greetings Can anybody inform me about the approximate value of a kennedy Half Dollar dated 1971d containing silver , thus being considered an Error . Many Thanks .. 7Calbrey
Hello I shall be sending scans after visiting the jeweller . The coin weighs 11.35 grams . In case it contains silver , how much you think it could be worth ? Thanks again .. 7Calbrey
Well, the weight is not that of a 40% silver half, but the regular cupro-nickel half issued that year. Probably silver plated, even though there may have been a few struck on leftover 40% planchets (which would weigh 11.50 grams). A lot of these 'silver' Kennedys have been "found" by CT members: http://www.cointalk.com/t191387/
Considering that 1970 was the final year for Kennedy halves to contain silver, this would be priceless as an error. If it's not silver plated that is, and is struck on a silver planchet, which most likely it is.
Value? Depends on condition....... Yes, the Denver Mint has been reported striking half dollars in 1971 and again in 1977 accidently on left over 40% silver stock. It is an off metal error, no more and no less. The last 40% silver 1977-D graded MS63 by PCGS that I was watching sold for $2,600.00. If your coin is authentic and grades MS then you may have a four digit coin, if it only grades AU or below then probably just a fraction of that value.
@l.cutler .. You're absolutely right, coin-friend. I was a total beginner by that time. Please accept my apologies every one. Thanks to all of you.
