I'm confident that if they released "revived" versions of these classic coins, we'd be severely disappointed. I'm sure they would have no where near the detail and quality of the original coins.
actually, several of these designs have already been re-visited already. Silver American Eagle - Walking Liberty Half Dollar Gold American Eagle - St. Gaudens Double Eagle the king of them all IMHO is the current $50 Gold Buffalo Coin. This design is so beloved by Americans that it was not only revived here, but also recreated in a commemorative silver dollar. Unlike the other designs all 3 of these coins bear both obverse and reverse designs of the original. There have also been the Liberty subset of the first spouse coins which have featured modern renditions of the draped bust cent, capped bust design, the seated liberty design, and the coronet large cent designs. I think that if we were asked, we'd also like a precious metal coin featuring the Mercury Dime design as well. But in the end I agree with scottishmoney. Let's bring some new designs in to compliment these great old designs. And in order to do so, we need coinage re-design on a wholesale scale with a return to Liberty images rather than memorial tributes.
Like the idea, but in MS and not proof. It'll take the milk spots a while longer to become noticable.
Back in 2006, when the US Mint released the "San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative", I just had to have one. With visions of a drop dead gorgeous Morgan Dollar Reverse in proof and UNC! Everybody wanted the same thing and orders simply took off! The web site bogged down and it was assumed by some that a winner was in the making! When the coins arrived, I was blown away! After some close inspection, I was blown away yet again! Not with what I thought I had bought, but with what I actually received! Namely, a low reliefed, mass produced, piece of junk that had something which resembled a Morgan Dollar Reverse. The lettering had absolutely no relief! The Cameo effect looked "placed" on the coin instead of being the end result of freshly produced dies on their first outing in a coining press! The coin itself was a dud. A piece of junk produced with todays mass production technilogy which it reflected over ever square millimeter! IF, the US MINT were to produce a "Revival Set" as siggested by the OP, it would ONLY be lauded by the newbies who cannot afford much less appreciate the skill which it took to produce some of the Classic Coin Designs which overflowed with relief! Such a set produced today would be nothing short of a numismatic sin which would do nothing but flood the modern coin market with more junk! Folks, there's a reason that most collectors avoid modern coins and it has only a little bit to do with the designs! It's the relief! The modern coinage of today and the past 40 years simply has no relief and as such, it's basically unattractive! My vote is to NOT perpetuate such a travesty on the Numismatic Community since it would elevate the US Mint to the same status as the Franklin Mint or any other number of wannabee coin creators!
Would love to see it myself and this has been discussed numerous times on CT – apparently the mint doesn’t check the blogs. Then, it would require a level of competence not currently present at the mint, as witnessed by recent decisions. If they were to issue such a set, I’d like to see a complete type set, ending somewhere in the mid 20th century, with current date, done as true as possible to the original business strikes – not as modern mirrored proofs (I prefer cartwheel luster to blinding contrast). The set could be done over several years, much like the modern commemorative series, but I suspect much more popular and profitable for the mint.
I agree, the sf mint commems could have been much nicer, yet, there’s no reason the mint couldn’t produce true replicas, other than lack of competence.
OGP is more easily reproduced than coins. The Certificate of Authenticity is nothing more than a joke printed on a piece of cardboard which is easier to reproduce than the OGP!
Yeah, but if I order it from the US Mint, and not Beijing, I'm pretty much assured of authenticity........
I would say this would be a neat idea if they weren't proof. If all they made was proof I wouldn't even consider it for a second. I'd like: cent: Draped Bust nickel: Buffalo dime: Liberty Seated quarter: Draped Bust- Heraldic Eagle reverse Half: Capped Bust (lettered edge) Dollar: Draped Bust- Small Eagle reverse Looking at that I guess I'm a bust guy. Guy
Guy, I think you might reconsider if the product looked appealing enough. I personally love this Canadian set: http://store.gatewestcoin.com/cgi/v...sa&site=1&session-ID=13j52d23l41d832&t=369469 they also made a special edition proof set (and I can't seem to find any pics of it) that was all made in the original designs from half cent to dollar coin and the 5 cent coin was a silver half dime rather than a nickel coin. I REALLY wanted one of those sets, but alas, I couldn't obtain one. All in all I think that you should (and probably really do) consider things on a case by case basis rather than blanketly rejecting the idea of proofs. there are ugly unc re-treads as well.
I would maybe do that, Mike. On the whole, though, I usually just can't stand proof anything- modern or classic. It's like a Coke-Pepsi thing. Guy
Yep, these modern proofs are like medals or something - nothing like a coin. I don't like the volatility of the mirrored surface or the high contrast. Give me good old cartwheel luster on a high grade unc.
