Between this, and the bust half my teller got from a convenience-store cash deposit, I'm thinking I'm in the wrong line of business. Then again, I don't seem to get shot at quite as frequently as convenience-store employees around here.
It's amazing what people do with these kinds of things. From the same gas station employee I got $14 Face Value of silver quarters. He said someone brought them in to pay for gas, and when he put them in the drawer he noticed they sounded funny. He kept them and put the $14 in the register to cover the difference. I came in and he told me about them so I asked what he was going to do with them and he said he'd sell them. I asked what he wanted for them and he thought for a second or two and said $100 for everything. I said you just want $100? He said yea I'm going out to the bar tonight and need some money. At the time it was over $300 worth of silver alone. Some times you just find yourself in the right place when people know you collect coins and paper money! :yes:
I read these kind of stories with mixed feelings. I seriously doubt those coins had been floating around in circulation only to land at a gas station after all these years. Far more likely they were purloined from grampa's coin collection by someone too ignorant to recognize their value or afraid they'd get caught if they sold the coins outright. Good for the observant cashier, not so good for grampa. On the other hand, I'd rather see a low-wage worker profit through their knowledge than someone else through theft. Call me cynical, but that's my theory.

I have not been able to find anything more than a common star at any gas station. That is exciting enough for me so if I was able to find some legal tender or silver certificates I would feel really good about that... I am always in a hurry when I am in most stores so I like to focus more on my bank teller!
