I signed up for their Franklin Half Dollar club out of curiosity. I know littleton overcharges for coins, but I needed some material from them to make a good video. The point of this video is not to bash littleton, but to educate new collectors to stay away from them.

Ok, this may very well be my first post here. I've lurked for years but don't believe I've posted before.

I'd be very careful identifying yourself as being associated with this website and then going on to badmouth a company in a public forum (Youtube). I'm not a lawyer, but I highly doubt that the admins here want their name associated with the slander of a company.

edit: hmm, looks like it wasn't my first post :)

It cost's $1000s to take someone to court, it's not worth it for a company. The worst they can do is send a cease-and-desist letter to take the video down.

Attorneys are expensive, Tim. Actual and putative damage awards can be high. You'd better get a job soon.

I'm sure Littleton has attorneys (good ones, too.) on staff, so their cost is a non starter.

Frankly, I don't see anything he said that would be of legal concerns. There was no slander. He merely points out what anyone can find right on Littleton's website, which is pricing. If their own pricing compared to others is slander, then they seriously need an new approach to business.

One thing I don't really like about Littleton is that they sometimes send you coins in the mail randomly, and you either have to send them back or buy them...

Believe me, I'm not here to defend Littleton. I'm concerned that he identified himself as being from Cointalk and that could have legal repercussions. Will they come after CT, probably not, but you can never be too careful in this litigious society we live in.

Doesn't look so bad in the pic on the vid, but here it is in proper lighting.

  15. I believe he just stated an opinion (overpriced, cleaned, etc.) as a review so it should not be a legal issue. The only questionable part was when he advised people not to buy from them and also spread the word as well.

If he didnt id himself as being from CT then I dont see any problems. The fact that he id'd himself as being from CT now puts CT in the cross-hairs if Littleton has a bug up their A$$.

Littleton is overpriced. But, they haven't stayed in business for half a century for no good reasons. They serve a collector base that is one of the largest anywhere. When you buy from them you at least know what you're getting and that it's genuine, which isn't always the case with some other, cheaper places, such as Ebay. Some people accept the higher prices that comes along with that peace of mind. I'm not one of them, but I can see why others would be.

There have been more than a few comments made about Littleton on this forum. I'm sure they've seen them.........

First of all, you are not Detecto from CoinTalk, no matter what your aspirations are, and you probably will never be. BTW, the moderators could claim to be "from CoinTalk", does it pay good? :) Also, I have ordered coins from Littleton, but the only moderate deals I have gotten was when "joining" one of their clubs (three silver halves for $20 wasn't bad). Their US coins are quite overpriced, but some of their prices for foreign stuff isn't too bad, and the literature from them is quite good.

I will give them this, they are responsible for getting a lot of new collectors in the hobby.

and I agree with you on that part.

However it's a double edged sword..

While Littleton does bring new collectors to the hobby, they do it by ripping them off.

There is absolutely no need to double or triple your money selling coins, and that is what littleton does. Even the biggest coin dealers in the nation have stayed afloat for decades by making a small amount on each coin.

For example, littleton buys a silver dollar for $32, then they sell it for $76.50. They make $44.50 on each silver dollar sold. That is an absurd profit.

If they sold morgan dollars for $44.99, they can still make a good profit.

The idea of coins on approval is lovely, and I actually give littleton merit for that, but they need to price themselves much cheaper.

If they were cheaper, they could sell 5 morgan dollars in the time it would take to sell one expensive Morgan dollar. Instead of a profit for $44.50, they could make a profit of $64.95 in the same time frame, if they were cheaper.

I guarantee they would make more sales if they were cheaper.

I'm not saying the company is a scam, they don't sell fake coins, double charge people's credit cards, etc. But their practice of over-charging for coins, is a scam quite frankly.

I hope people watch my video, and then decide to use eBay/LCS for their coin collecting needs.

The more people I can educate, the better that makes me feel. I know I can't change the world, but maybe I can change the minds of a few people.

If everyone remembers reading about "Treasure Hunters Roadshow" and how badly they ripped people off (If I recall a member here got their coin stolen from them), a lot could of been prevented if we had the knowledge to forewarn people ahead of time.

To me, there is a lot more to coin collecting that just collecting coins, I think educating new collectors is the 2nd most important thing any coin collector can do.
