Check this out! I found this piece in a lot of bulk dollars. My research turned up this article and pictures about this coin and the man who made it. I thought it was neat and I wanted to share.
It's interesting you just posted the story about the stickered coins Matt. I have a couple (not this particular coin) in my exonumia collection, one on a state quarter issued by a coin club several years ago, and a second on a Sac Dollar from a coin dealer in Florida that I just bought the other day. These coins are collected by some in the hobby and are kind of interesting to have. I don't know if anyone gets in trouble nowadays for doing it, but I suppose it is technically illegal. Since Stark's coins are silver dollars they would be worth a lot more than mine. I paid only $5 for the Sac. Generally, I think the average stickered coin isn't worth much, but it would depend some on the sticker itself. Thanks for the story Matt...very interesting. Bruce
A few years back when the second Fantastic Four movie came out (Rise of the Silver Surfer) the movie studio distributed 40,000 state quarters with an advertising sticker for the movie on it and the Secret Service came down on them over it. And when the designer of the Missouri quarter didn't like the changes the government made to his design he started putting stickers on Missouri state quarters showing his original design. He was also told to cease and desist.
Now that you mention it Conder, I do recall the problem with the Missouri State Quarters. Thanks for refreshing my memory. Bruce
I know I tried to research exonumia like counterstamps and found it really difficult to find any informaiton at all about how much they are worth. The only way to really sell them is by auctioning them off starting with the cost of the coin or a little less. I think that the value of them is how much someone would be willing to buy them for and that is about it.
nice sticker $. There is a guy (I forget his name) from NumisNews who collects these. He is the one who writes pages about his travels to shows.
You guys beat me to it. I was going to suggest talking to him too. He writes about every show he goes to how many of these items he can pick up. If anyone in the world knows this market it would be him.
