Let's see, Sogdian, Sassanid, Parthian, Chionite/Hepthalite, circa 300 ad Roman, Late Byzantine, Kushan, Early Chinese just off the top of my head.

Far along? Idk, maybe 100 of each on average so far, save for the Chinese where i have many more.

When will I ever be "complete"? Never. That is the fun, there is no such thing as "complete" or "needed" in ancients. Lots of wants, just no "needs". :D

WOW, that's a lot of coins! I need to step my game up. I can see reasons why with ancients you may never complete a "set."

Franklins, about half done, maybe inside a year, it is a shorter set that can be done in a higher grade without a huge monetary stopper, finding the rest of the needed coins in MS63 or higher.

I do not have a series I am working on or even a type set. I just buy quality coins I like. There are some coins like Buffalos which I prefer but I have no need to complete a set of any kind.

As far as when it is completed, maybe never, maybe it is already complete. These things are hard to say.

Lets see for albums: large cents(need maybe 4), buts halves(maybe 8 - 10 excluding 1796,1797), Lincolns(maybe 4 replacement coins), two cents(need 2 coins 1870, 1872), Liberty nickels(may 6-8) for two pages to be completed. That is it for now. Nothing else counts as a collection and only a few odds and ends.

I started collecting the Booker T. Washington commems. They're relatively inexpensive for the most part. Although in high grades they can be a bit costly. I'm collecting MS64 or higher in these. Also just recently started collecting Kennedy's, starting from 1964-present. I figured it was about time to focus on one coin. I am usually all over the board. I go with what I like.

    5 QUESTIONS: With my answers

What series or type set are you working on? The set I am working on is the Merc dime collection.

How far along are you? I have a lot of it completed, but I am still waiting for the 1916-D from someone. (I love free gifts)

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set? It really depends... I want to spend the cash for the good quality coins, not just any quality.

Why did you choose that series or type set? I love the look of old dimes.

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set? The 1916-D is the biggest obstacle for me right now.

Large cents. Nearly done with basic date run, need about five more, but also work on varieties, in which I need a whole lot more. Never plan on finishing because I'm not a multi-millionaire. Obstacles in that set are a few unique pieces and some nearly unique pieces that sell in the million dollar plus range.

Bust halves. About seven short of basic date run. But, am working on variety set, of which I have about 50 pieces but need hundreds more. Never plan on finishing as I think it's impossible to do so. Main obstacles incluse pieces that do not come up for sale more often than a few times in a lifetime and the remote possibility of me finding them when they do.

What series or type set are you working on?

Currently working on sets of Roosevelt Dimes, Jefferson Nickels, Kennedy Half Dollars, and a Type Set of "Jazz Age" graded coins (1920-1930 Lincoln Cent, Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, Walking Liberty Half, Peace Dollar, and $10.00 gold piece).

    How far along are you?

Roosevelt Dimes: Clad is complete; silvers are 20% complete.
    Jefferson Nickels: 95% complete.
    Kennedy Half Dollars: 98% complete.
Type Set: Only the Peace Dollar has been purchased.

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?

Roosevelt Dimes: By the end of 2013.
Jefferson Nickels: By the end of this year.
Kennedy Half Dollars: By the end of this year.
Type Set: No time frame as I want to get coins that speak to me.

Why did you choose that series or type set?

Roosevelt Dimes: The silver coins are cheap and plentiful to acquire.
Jefferson Nickels: My grandmother started the set in the 1950s and I want to complete it.
Kennedy Half Dollars: I used to roll search for silver and high grade MS clad coins are easy to find.
Type Set: Because the coins exude Art Deco sophistication that is lacking from modern coinage.

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?

Roosevelt Dimes: The price of silver. But it is not a big obstacle.
    Jefferson Nickels: None.
Kennedy Half Dollars: I want to find all the coins in circulation, and I'm down to 2 from the 1980s. They are hard to find in MS condition because of casino usage.
Type Set: Price and finding the coins I want.

What series or type set are you working on?

Funny you should ask...For every denomination I choose a series that way when I get bored or exhaustive on one series, I can easily switch to something else that makes my fancy. So, currently:

Dollars: Keeping up with presidentials and Sac-still need the 2012 presidentials for me to be caught up

    Halves: Franklin

Quarters: State (Yeah, I know, but I want to eventually start Washington, but didn't feel right without having the state, territories and national parks)

    Dimes: Barber

Nickles: Eww...though the Liberty nickles do grab my interest more than any of the others; however, I haven't officially collected any as of yet apart from those handed down

    Cents: Wheats

    How far along are you?

Need the 2012 Presidential series in PDS. For Franklin I'm missing one in MS 63 or higher and that's the 1952 S. Quarters: Need 2006-2009 S. Dimes: I'm no where near that far along as I only have 3 in the series...can't recall the dates off hand. Cents: I need 1909-1939 as well as 1941 S, 1947 P, 1951 P, 1951 S, 1952 S

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?

Presidential, state quarters, and Franklin half and several of the cents will hopefully be completed next week at a coin show. The rest of the cents and the Barber dimes will no doubt take a couple years at minimum to complete to my satisfaction.

Why did you choose that series or type set?

Presidential: I simply enjoy seeing all the former presidents together as well as the Statue of Liberty design on the reverse

Sac: Tributes to Native American culture unique to coin designs, plus, I initially began the collection because the reverse eagle was a great piece of art.

Halves: Always enjoyed the pictoral of Franklin as well as the liberty bell lines and definition

Quarters: Ultimate goal is to start a Washington set and the State Quarters is just practice on identifying key elements of Washington

Dime: I have Mercury and Roosevelt. Barber just belongs to the dime family heirarchy.

Cents: I love the wheat ears and the memorial steps. Progression of the Lincoln obverse design through the century makes for a fascinating study. Plus, I wanted something copper to contrast all the silver coinage in the portfolio.

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?

Nothing for the quarters or the dollars-just availability of funds and motivation. Ben Franklin Half: The 1952 S is my unicorn. I cannot for the life of me find one with problem free fields, descent bell lines, great working on the bell and minimal cheek marks with decent representation of his hair. (Not that I'm picky). Dimes: There's a couple of keys that will be a problem. Plus, I'm still learning them and it's just a process of being comfortable to grade raw coins. Cents: Attempting MS 64-65 for as long as my funding will provide. I love distinct wheat ears and the O in ONE needs to be complete as that is a pet peeve of mine. I also want a variety of colors-red, red brown, and brown for the entire collection as well as one woody (again, not that I'm picky). Of course, the 1909 S VDB may be off my budget line.

I'm working on a Susan B. Anthony set.

I'm more-or-less finished. I've got all the proofs in 69, except the 1999 which is a 70. I'm debating getting into the MS versions as well. Not sure.

I could have finished it last week. Someone was selling off their whole set. Didn't have the cash though. I'll probably ease into it slowly because I want them slabbed to match the PFs. It would be dirt cheap otherwise.

I chose them because I was a kid in 1999, and I remember seeing them when they were reissued. I thought they were really cool, and then they disappeared. My parents had some from the original release, and I had a handful of them all these years. Kinda rediscovered them lately and I suspect they're undervalued, so I want to get high grades.

Cash. I COULD just go buy them all tonight. There aren't a lot of them and the prices aren't outrageous. But being a responsible husband, I'm going to try to restrain myself. We'll see how it goes.

My primary focus right now is Large Cents, however I can't decide where this collection starts and stops. I started with only collecting one coin per year for the braided hair cents (1939-1857). I then decided to try and get one of each major variety for the braided hair cents. I then decided to include one of each year for the Matron heads (1816-1857). Finally one of each variety for the transfer year of 1839.

#1) The original goal of 39-57 only needs a 1839 to be complete (18/19)
#2) The secondary goal of 39-57 major varieties has some work to do (21/32)
#3) One of each year from 1816-1857 (34/42)
#4) There is overlap in these groups but overall (37/59)

I should be able to finish #1 this year, #3 maybe next year. #2 and #4 may never be finished due to one of the varieties of 1839 cent. The red book "estimate" for the 1839/36 overdate is $225 in G-4, but the CQR lists it for $500 in G-5. Not sure I will ever spend that amount for a coin in that condition.

I chose these coins because I feel they are one of the more beautiful sets of coins made by our country. They are relatively easy to find (but can be a challenge to find in VF/XF
). They won't break the bank and I can pick up a coin per month with out having to save up for each individual coin.

I'm currently working on about 20 different things, but the ones I'm focusing the most on are:
Mexico 1905 to now non-silver coinage; Greek 1900-now; Brazilian reis coins 1871-1939; Australia and New Zealand all circulating issues and mint set versions of circulating coins when there was no circulating coin for that year.
How far from completion: Mexico: I need about six coins. Greece - need 2 coins. Brazil - need about 15 coins. Australia and New Zealand - lots of coins I still need.
What keeps me from completing them: Mexico: All the coins I need never come up for sale. Greece - coins rarely come up for sale and then sell for too much. Brazil - just waiting for the coins to come up for sale. Australia - combination of high prices and low availability.
How long until I finish: Just a matter of finding the coins I need at the right price. Could be next week or next year.
Why did I choose them? Mexico - I liked the designs, and it was easy to get started since they are common in the U.S. Greece: I liked the designs, plus there aren't a lot of coins to get. Coins were only made once every few years. Brazil - liked the design. Australia and New Zealand - like the design.

Photos of Hawaii commemorative half & 1932 $10 gold Indian eagle

    Hello Lonegunlawyer,

It is nice to learn about the different collections of different CoinTalkers’. I personally have collected a bunch of different sets including cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, & dollars. These sets are all finished (or unfinished) just the way that I want them. (i.e. There is no 1909SVDB in the Lincoln cent collection but there is a nice 1916-D in the Mercury dime collection).

Today there are several sub-sets where I actively seek coins. From around the World, these include Leprosy colony coins and CAR coins. One new collection I am assembling is a type set of USA classic commemorative half dollars. I currently only have about 10 different pieces. If I buy a few classic commemoratives each year then it should be complete in 5-10 years. :D

This last Saturday I purchased this 1932 Indian gold coin. It is only the 2nd $10 Indian in my collection but it sure would be nice to assemble the set. If someone were to give me a few different dates it might be the incentive I need to begin the collection. Send me a PM if anyone needs my ship-to address.

I'm getting pretty close on a Walking Liberty set -- need the 21-D, 16-S and a few non-keys. I built out most of a Barber half set when a certain cash-for-gold outfit was selling them in lots on eBay, but I'm not pursuing it very actively at the moment.

I'm a 21-D and 16-D short of a Mercury set, an 1885 and 1912-S short of a Liberty nickel set, but not really pursuing those either.

I lucked into a 1921 and 1928-P Peace dollar, but I don't really feel like I'm collecting the set -- I've got this irrational mindset that silver dollars are too expensive (per coin) to let me collect an entire set. Doesn't make much sense in light of the half-dollar sets.

I'm working to complete a mid to higher circulated set of:
    Liberty Nickels
    Buffalo Nickels
    Standing Liberty Quarters
    Peace Dollars

These are my four favorite series and I like the hunt, especially mid grade SLQs - they are relatively hard to find, especially the earlier years. On the other hand, Peace dollars are easy find in AU and MS, but the cost per coin right now makes that a slow moving series for me.

And although I'm not actually pursuing the series, I pickup full rim G-VG Barber halves whenever I find them for spot or slightly over.
