Hey all, I should preface this by saying I'm mainly a paper currency collector. I noticed an odd impression of three dots on this quarter, and I suspected it might be a strike-through error. I have little experience with coins, so I hoping y'all might be able to tell if this is a mint error or post-mint damage. By the way, I took this photo with a crappy camera through a magnifying glass. Getting it to focus was such a pain! . Thanks!
If the anomaly is concave, then I would agree with FE21. However, if the "dots" are raised, there may be something there. What does the OP think the "dots" are a strike-through of what part of the reverse?
The markings are concave - meaning they appear to be etched into the coin. I think convex would make it raised like braille. I thought it might have been some dirt on the die itself, which would made its impression on the coin. Wouldn't that make it a strike-through? But the size pattern, small - large - small seems to coincide with a rim hit like FE21 said. Thanks for your input.
Reed marks. Occurs when a coin with a reeded edge's rim comes in contact with another coin, causing an impression into the victim coin's surfaces. They usually occur in a mint canvas bag (with similar denom coins) during transport or just when being handled in circulation. Just PMD. Sorry.
