Raising the fare from $2.25 to $2.50 seems like a great idea. That way when I pay with a quarter-eagle I won't have to collect change.
Ah, but then you'd be overpaying! If you use four quarter-eagles to buy a $10 MetroCard, you'd save 7%! Not 7% of the $209 that a quarter-eagle is worth, but 7% of $2.50. Either way you look at it, I find it odd how people in NYC think they're the center of the universe. As if a $0.25 price hike and a discount for using a MetroCard to ride the train in NYC is the final nail in the coffin for coins worldwide.
