Unopened bag of pennies from 1961. How would one get more than face value from these? $50.00 bag of 1961 pennies.jpg

Solicitations to buy/sell/trade must be done in the appropriate forum! Isn't this the second time for you.

I'd say if they are bu as a whole bag maybe as much as 4 to 5x face. I'm not really sure never bought one

Lotokids, please note the message left in post 2. You did give an intent to sell so someone jumped offsides. When you decide to sell, please put a post in the proper subforum.

    Thanks
    Jim

The 61-D cents have a large number of RPM types, so that might bump the price somewhat.

I'm neither the most perceptive, nor an experienced forum poster, so it wouldn't have even occurred to me that this was inappropriate or misplaced. Having said that, if the question is one for experienced sellers about how to best sell this versus a veiled offer, that would be interesting indeed. Do you try to sell the whole bag, do you open and search it, do you sell individual rolls (transaction costs)? What would be the best way to get the most out of it?

I personally did not think this thread was a solicitation at all, except for advice.

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

But it was the poster you quoted who solicited in purchasing the bag from the original poster.

I was confused, but I think I am clear now. Thanks.

Since there seems to be some confusion, the solicitation was made in the second post, which I edited out. It did not refer to poster !. Since he had few posts here, and perhaps not familiar with the rules, in post #4, I advised him of procedures.

This seemed to me he was asking advice about selling ( get more) the bag. And then poster #2 jumped in. Sorry no big deal.

Thanks for the clarification - I was thoroughly confused. Now that that's cleared up, I hope to hear how experienced sellers advise on this question.

One scenario would be to offer it intact at a price you would be happy to get.

The best scenario would be to open it aand spend months and eyes finding all of the RPMs to sell separately, the 100 best appearing cleanest coins to keep or sell as high grades, roll the rest and sell rolls on ebay.

The one unknown is how much someone would add keeping it unopened and also how many of the coins are red, RB, or brown.

    good luck

    Whew

I was confused too, so just to verify I am ok asking about the value and if it is better to leave the bag sealed or to open it thus being able to see the individual coins? I am new here and don't want to tick anyone off or do something wrong.

Searching for RPM's does seem like it would be very time consuming and hard on the eye balls! Especially if this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-S-RPM-...41?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item25765ed559 is an example of an RPM penny. I just don't see a double stamp on the mint mark. ARRG I am terrible at this.

How should I train myself to pick up on these things?

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

Ask yourself - what's my time worth? You could be squinting at trivial mint "errors" for 50c per hour.

When I was doing my bags of cents of a friend who already eye trouble ( 68S-71S). I did it for for portions of the loot, I estimated the outcome by doing 500 cents carefully and seeing how many DD, RPM, or MS-65 there were. That allowed me to see if I wanted to continue the time for little result. Most were minor, although 2 varieties made it in electronic print. I would not do any more bags except pre-1950,1955P or D, 1960-D, 1972P, and any more of 68-S or 69-S. You can't examine each coin carefully in less than a minute or 2, so you have to have a good idea of what DD, RPMs you are looking for, then you can ignore the majority. The MS-65 or better will jump up. The bags were stored in a vault since issue, and 90% were Red. After separating out, the leftover bu or better were quickly sold at the coin club at $20 roll ( 1969S) and some from there were sold on eBay for $50 a roll. But the majority are still in our hands as we didn't want to kill the market :)

    1. Purchase or obtain a loupe of at least 10X (I prefer 15X-40X).

    2. Go to coppercoins.com and search the varieties for the year.

    3. Start searching.

In the beginning, you will want to see a variety in every coin, but this will most likely not be the case. Be patient. Unless it is an obvious doubling or over mint mark, you may need a 20X-40X power loupe. Also, think about getting the kids involved. A great way to spark interest in the hobby and a great family activity.
