The usual DDO for this, the lobe is lower and much more pronounced.

However, yours does look doubled in some fashion. Perhaps MMD like you would find on a date or motto.

I think it's worth keeping in a coin flip. I've been saving all my borderline coins for future examination, then when I get enough "good" coins I'll send them off for attribution ( http://conecaonline.org/attribution_services.html ). Since the shipping is one of the more prevalent costs in this process, I'll send several "good" coins and will throw in one or two of the borderline coins for my own amusement/sanity check.

I had a 1975 cent that I thought might have doubling on the lobe, but it came back as: "Either a touch of machine damage doubling or a contact mark. Circulation makes it hard to tell which." Since yours is pretty worn, I'm thinking it's probable that you'd get a similar response. Either way, I say keep it... it only cost you a cent and it's a good conversation piece.

Looks PMD, and that part of the ear is almost level with the PMD gouge on the left over Liberty , and the rim damage on the right. I think something smacked across there in a relatively straight line line and caused all of the noted damage. IMO.

I found this image of the 84 double ear on the internet and placed it on top of yours. There is strong doubling of the beard in the first image, and notice the lock of hair at the neck.
The second image shows the image at 45%... the third at 25% ... your image is last and I don't see these markers on your coin.
