Good luck thinking they might be 70's if you are sending them to PCGS~ I don't know if I can adequately express my displeasure of the quality of this set for fear that most of my descriptions will be bleeped out or deleted.
But to be nice they are garbage, I also typed a letter to the mint expressing how displeased I am with the quality. Long story short, I ordered 10 sets and 6/10 had no chance at even grading 69 (see pics for garbage) but I sent my other 4 sets into PCGS... got 2 PF70's on the regular proofs, everything else was a 69...

  4. Wow, those are pretty bad. I have never received that poor of quality coin on any mint issue. Mine show no flaws like that under very high magnification (other than the MD I mentioned which I sort of like...makes mine unique). I will never know or care if my set gets a 70 as I will never send it to a TPG. I hope you returned the sets that were poor quality. TC

Sorry, I know this is OT, but I got a chuckle reading through this thread and how "terrible" shape these coins are in. I was going through some of mine last night, (sogdians), and thinking to myself, "I really like this coin, but would like it better if it had a FACE".

    Different types of collecting, huh?

Well my second set should be here Wed. The plan is to keep the better of the two different coins and send the other set back for a replacement. I don't think that's overly dishonest as it appears as if these things are all over the place as far as quality - is it?. Who knows, with a high enough return rate there may not be any replacements.

Should have bought a damn certified set to begin with...

Am I ripping off the mint by doing this or is this justified?

I've got a proof that I am not happy with. The Reverse Proof is great, but the proof has large scratches. See for yourself.

Dang I didn't even think about this.... I shouldn't have cancelled my order for 5 more sets, then I could have sent them some of these crap sets I got stuck with... Oh well... I was able to dump a few of them at the show this weekend for what I paid for them so same same I guess. Quality on these was crap, wish I would have loaded up on cheap PF70 sets when they came out... DOH!~

Well my second set arrived today. Reverse proof, thankfully, was OK. Probably not MS70, but at least it had no scratches viewable at 1.0x magnification. The regular proof was OK, but not as good as the original I received. So the worst of the two coins gets returned tomorrow, as a set. Their fate, I don't know. Melting? Probably. I've requested a replacement item, not a refund.

I'm not sure if I should feel bad about mix/matching my return between two sets, but after waiting three months since ordering and receiving two sets that were less than 100% (the first MUCH less than 100%), I am personally OK with it. I don't think I can be blamed for being irriated at this ****-poor level of quality. Every ASE I've ordered, or US Mint coin for that matter, has been much better than these. SF used to turn out the finest coins. Heck, I've gotten proofs from the Russian Federation that looked better than this.

Nah, don’t feel bad, you’re doing for the mint what they should have done in the first place.

So, what’s the verdict? Do the latest deliveries have more problem coins, so it looks like the mint is sending out previously returned coins?

I do not think you are ripping the mint by cherrying out the best set. But it is nice that you consider the question.

Sent the 'bad' set back a few days ago, requesting a replacement set. I got an e-mail saying:

So I guess that means there's no replacement set heading my way.

Though I am not fully satisfied, I am not going to be exchanging nor returning my set. I like it for now, and don't want to deal with the hassle of going through replacement set after replacement set trying to find the one. I may sell it down the road though.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

All returns get credited back to your card. When the replacements are sent, the charge your card again.
