Is this a DDO? I took over 120 photos and after all was said and done, I kept 15. Sorry if some are redundant, but it was HARD to get decent images through the casing. Tell me I didn't spend this much time and effort in 'error' :)

It's possible, but cannot see enough to say either way for sure. If it is, its very minor though.

No matter how good a photographer you are, it's always easier to see the coin in hand and determine from there. I would try bringing it to a show to have it checked out. There are some DDOs for multiple proof denominations somewhere around this year, but as I said, best to let someone take a look.

Therein lies the problem: Even in hand, it's still in the proof set and the case hinders viewing a bit. It looks like FS-50-1971S-102 in the CPG to me.

I don’t see any significant doubling in your photos. The doubling on the I of IN would just be Series Doubling.

It looks like slabbed examples sell for over $200 at the low side, and over $400 on the high end. If I were to decide to submit that one coin from the proof set, would I have to break it out and send it? Or send the set as is with instructions to grade that one coin and include flips to return the others with? How does that work?

The glare in the photos makes it difficult to see any doubling.

I understand what you are seeing, but even from the photos there is enough that does not match up to safely say that it is not the aforementioned variety. However, this is not to say the coin is not another variety. Keep in mind that cherrypickers is not an all inclusive variety reference, and really, it is nothing more than a sampling of the more significant and/or popular ones. It is a good book (books) but has its limitations.

There are a lot of minor doubled dies in the earlier Kennedy series, and if you spend enough time looking through such coins, you are bound to find a number of them. While most varieties have an added coolness factor (IMO), this unfortunately does not translate into demand or dollar signs. If you wish to submit, you have every right to do so, but I highly doubt you will be able to recoup the costs in the long run. It looks to be a nice coin, so you may want to consider just enjoying as it is. Either way, I wish you luck.

Thank you Books. I appreciate your advice. Not sure if I will send it, but if I choose to, do I break the proof set and send the individual coin or how is that done?

    No problem :)

I've never submitted anything in mint packaging, but do know people who have sent in individual coins while in their original cellophane. Being as this is a hard plastic case and that you only (may) wish to have one coin graded, you might as well crack it out before doing so since the grader would not ever see the packaging anyway. I actually doubt that the TPG would accept the entire set when only one coin was to be graded, but again I've never sent in mint packaging, so someone else would probably be able to tell you for sure.

While it's true that the doubling of 'trust' is minor, and that it's probably not a DDO-006 as I originally thought, what about the srtong doubling in the BERTY of 'liberty' seen here? Now I see that in the CPG there is another one more similar to mine (FS-50-1971S-101) in which the decription mentions ERTY of 'liberty' and everything else I've pictured here.... Could mine be that?

Thanks for the link! I wish each listing had photos to compare with, as there are many different DDO's for this one.

There are two different obverse varieties for the 71S Kennedy obverse...ODV-002 (Obverse Die Variety), and ODV-003. The way to tell them a part is by looking at the right leg of the R in LIBERTY. The ODV-002 is a weak R and the ODV-003 is a strong R...you have an ODV-003. The DDO-004 (FS-101) is an ODV-002...so your half couldn’t be a DDO-004. I have been trying to tell you that you are seeing some Series Doubling on your half...did you read the description for the 71S SDO-001.

I think you are just beating a dead horse.

Thank you for the info! I appreciate your input also. I'd hate to crack open a proof set for nothing. On the other hand, I bought 5 of these sets and this is the only one that looks this way. I was going to ask about DDO-013 through DDO-017 but don't want to make you feel as though I'm not receptive to what you are saying.... Quite the contrary, as a matter of fact.

I wonder what the reporter of DDO-017 would have done if someone told him he was wasting his time on the 71S he reported that only has a population of 1. I wonder who owns that 1?

Wow! Someone's trying to learn about a variety and are accused of :dead-horse:

    Unbelievable!
