The start on my very 1st album, and a question for album collectors.

So I have decided for my 1st album, I'm going to choose the Roosevelt dime.

    Reasons for this:

    1. Cheap. I can find the silver ones for $2.50-$3.00 each. Even if I budget $15 a month, that's still 5 to 6 silver dimes.
    2. There are not that many keys. The 49-S, the 1955, 1955-D, 1955-S and 1996-W. Even at that, they are not expensive.
    3. BU examples are not that hard to find, VS mercury dimes, BU early date mercury dimes can get expensive.

Last night I acquired my 1st. The 1957. Mintage of 161.4 Million.

Also, for those that do the albums, do you collect everything and leave it as is, or do you routinely try to upgrade the album by adding better coins?

Most try to update but not until completely done. I'd first put all effort into completing the list then when done in order to keep the collecting going start updating coins as you find them, shooting for a grade range.

Ya. I'm not gonna get too fancy with it, as long as it's at least uncirculated for the silver dimes, a few small dings won't hurt like in the coin above.

Well tonight I acquired 8 silver rosies. Only 4 were paid, the other 4 were on a trade with some mercs and barber dimes (low grade) that I had.

A nice '64 is in the bunch. Along with a '46 (the start) and a semi key, the 1949-D, mintage 26 million.

So far I have spent $10. A couple more dimes and that will probably it for this month.

Looking on eBay....I think I will stick locally for now. After shipping and handling I would be paying $4 each for silver dimes.

Oddly enough many sites don't list the keys and semi keys correctly. The 1955-P has the lowest mintage at 12.45 million. Several sites list the 50-S, 51-S and 52-S as "semi keys" but they mintages of 20,31 and 44 million.

While the 55-P 1955-D and 1955- S all have mintages under 20 million.

Nice start. Keeping it reasonable and not likely to get in too deep. If that is the condition that you will strive for, you should be able to do most of the clad album for coin roll hunting.

I started silver Washington quarters not long ago.

I bought some MS63 but now I am trying to stick with MS64+. I dont need MS66 quality (Althought it would be nice), but ideally I would like to buy MS65, and not upgrade them in future.

Can anyone verify this? I know the numbers are correct, but why would multiple sites list the 50-52 S mints as semi keys, but they have high mintages?

Very cool Dennis68, in that case, I have a 1976, 1977 & a 1990d that are all BU and still in the mint cello that I would gladly send your way. PM me an address and I'll donate them to your folder :smile

The 1955s were hoarded by the roll keeping supply high.

So, then what are the true keys and semi keys of the rosies?

i have a feeling it is very similar to the jeffersons, earlier dates in mint state are a conditional rarity. although i havent delved much into the roosevelt series i can imagine the few years after the first will be harder to find.

Nice start Detecto! Good idea for a budget-minded set.

Nice start! Rosies do tend to be a cheaper set to assemble. I started a set of Mercs a couple years ago, those things are pretty pricey to fill holes. I still haven't completed it. Even on a more common date, it can cost upwards of $5 and $8 for one coin!
