i have seen coins like this listed as broadstrikes. are they? if not, what are they if anything at all. advice appreciated. the first pic is of one coin. the other 3 are of a different coin.
these are coins from worn out dies. a broadstruck coin is a coin that has been struck by the dies without the retaining collar in place. this lets the coins spread out much larger in diameter than they are supposed to be.
Also, the broadstrike will have all the coin details. For example, you go to McDonald's to get an egg McMuffin. They break the egg into a circular restraining collar to keep the egg nice and round to fit nicely within the bounds of the muffin. Take away that nifty round restrainer and the egg spreads out. You still have all the egg, but it is not that perfect round shape.
yes that is a good simple way to describe what a broadstruck coin is. I just never thought of describing them this way.
