about 2 months ago i was looking threw my poket change and i found a 1961 jeferson nikel. The only reson why am i keeping it cause i think theres silver in it. is there such a thing of a 1961 jeferson nikel with silver? please help
What makes you think your nickel contains silver? All nickels contain 75% copper and 25% nickel except War Nickels (1942-1945) which contain 35% silver. Your coin is not a War Nickel; it is an ordinary nickel with no silver.
That's amazing! A silver 1961 nickel! Congratulations on that unique find even though it's completely impossible but what do I know? The best thing to do is to get it verified though a grading company like PCGS and then put it up for auction. It should bring more than $25,000!!! Yessiree, the find of the century! Btw, if you have a pic of it along with the weight, it would really be a thrill to see!
I believe the "rub test" is what PCGS uses to authenticate coins. Of course, only after administering the "smell test". Dude.
Don't you love it when a new member says "i need help" and then spits in the face of those that try to help?
Fine, it feels like silver. It has to taste and smell like silver, too. Without passing all three tests, no jackpot!
If you purchase a copy of the Red Book you will find a large amount of quality information on US coinage. This will help you in the future. By the way, the US did not make silver nickels in 1961 and only did so from 1942-1945.
