Is there a source that lists the common reproduction Confederate notes? I thought a saw a website a while back that listed the really common ones with their serial number as a resource to help ensure you aren't buying a modern fake wen purchasing online.

I want to pick up a couple original Confederate notes...nothing overly expensive, but I don't want to make a stupid error like this. I want to do my homework first. I am going to pick up that book we discussed in the other thread soon...just haven't got it yet.

Here is an example of something that I would consider (assuming the price doesn't go too high). What do you think:

Maybe I'll just stick with graded notes. But, I know that many of the Confederate issues are common and not that valuable. So, I would think if they aren't common modern fakes (like on that website)...the more common issues are probably fairly safe. But, I could be wrong.

When searching for graded notes...are PMG and PCGS the only TPGs worth dealing with (like PCGS and NGC with coins)?

Absolutely legit notes. There are counterfeits out there of some notes, but those late run notes are almost always legit, though the $500 had some reproductions made, as did the $100 (famous Havana repro - more valuable normally than the real thing) and some $50's also I think showed up.

That auction is a nice start for a good, collectible grade Confederate note collection.

When the book arrives, you'll see that there are a few issue with alot of counterfeit action, but most... not much to worry about. And most counterfeits are pretty obvious, honestly.

Gosh I remember when replica Reb notes came with a box of Cherrios. Its amazing to see these things being passed off today, to the unwary.

And I hated Cheerios but pestered my mom to buy the flipping things so I could get the fake note.

What do you think a fair price for this lot would be?

I might go $70 on that lot.

I usually buy all of my Confederate notes through Heritage and have been VERY satisfied with what I have gotten through them. The raw notes there can sometimes be a steal compared to graded examples other places.

Indeed, need to watch those Tuesday auctions, sometimes some pretty good stuff gets overlooked because it got stuffed there instead of a signature auction.

I only have 1 confederate issued (Richmond) note - a $20 that I bought 50 years ago (uncirculated and before the TPGs existed). Mine has a nice CSA watermark on it. Is the watermark true of all genuine confederate notes?

Sorry - I didn't see you on the next page LOL! Here's my one & only CSA note. However, you can't see the watermark in these pictures.

Do you know if the notes from Feb 1864 have a water mark? I was thinking about trying to put together a full set of the Feb 1864 issues.
