Question about the 1921 Peace Dollar

From what I've read, the mint didn't start producing Peace dollars until Dec 28th, 1921 yet the mintage for that year was just over 1,000,000. Seems like a lot for only 3 or 4 days of striking in those days. We're any of these actually minted in 1922 with the '21 date or did they manage to pump out a million in those last few days of 1921?

Roger Burdette's Red Book of Peace Dollars is a good source for this information. I know that Roger is a detail-oriented guy, and he leaves no stone unturned to get accurate information.

According to his book, coining operations for the 1921 began at 8:30am on December 28 and continued through to the normal closing of 1:00pm on Saturday, December 31. He further states that no 1921 Peace dollars were struck in 1922.

    December 28 - 200,000

    December 29 - 103

    December 30 - 656,370

    December 31 - 150,000

    Total - 1,006,473

And from what I've seen of them over the years I think the only fully struck ones were done on the 29th.

cpm, thanks for the well informed response. Next question: anyone have any spare '21's to donate?

Pretty much the only way you'd get anyone on here to donate coins to you is if you're young, like under 13 young. To add to that you'd need to become a regular participant on this forum and gain a favorable rapport with people. Aside from this you're going to have a tough time finding someone on here who will just give you a 1921 Peace Dollar.

I could almost guarantee that a father would not respond that way.

    And neither would I.

You quote my post some thirteen days later and say "Not accurate." but add nothing to elaborate on your comment. Not accurate how? Do you have a story or example to share which validates your statement?

I've personally, and I know of others who have as well, passed coins onto new members here without regard to how long their membership has been active, how old they are, or established rapport, favorable or not.

That is well and good, thank you for elaborating. I doubt they were Peace dollars, though.

I can't say about others I know who have, but I have passed on a couple of common Peace dollars worth melt.

It's not all dollars and cents to me. It's a collection, nothing more.

NOS, you have been around long enough that you should remember, I have given away BU Peace dollars, not a '21, but Peace dollars just the same. I have also given away gold coins, at least 5 of them and probably more. I used to buy gold coins just so I could give them away on this forum. And even back then, they were valued at multiples of what the Peace dollars were.

Point is, it happens. Some people on this forum do do nice things - just because.

I got burnt buying a gold coin yesturday and I don't even collect gold coins, I collect silver coins and wanted to buy more Peace dollars originally. SHould have just stuck to buying the dollars, but learned my lesson though and it wasn't for a lot of money at least.
