Has anyone heard of a Doubled Die 1957 D Wheatie? I have one which has some doubling of Lincoln's face. There is some slight doubling of the forehead and nose with strong doubling of the lips and chin. I would guess the condition to be around VF or slightly better. Any info on rarity or value would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I would have to guess that your doubled die wheatie may not actually be die doubling, but is probably hub doubled or has what is known as Machine Doubling Damage (MDD), a form of what most would consider to be damage to a coin. I would urge you to post a photo on here for us, or else take the coin to a dealer in your area to get it looked at professionally.

AJ is probably right about the coin having Strike or Machine Doubling! However, Coneca lists 12 Doubled Die Obverse Varieties for a 1957-D Wheat Cent. If you can post some pictures, maybe we can tell if the coin is a Doubled Die or not!

There have been a few actual Doubled Die Wheat Cents discovered within the last few years. Any new Doubled Die Wheat Cents should be considered rare because they went so many years without detection which indicates that there are very few specimens that made it through the Quality Control process at the Mints. However, interest in anything other than Brilliant Uncirculated specimens is very hard to come by. If it is found, that the coin is a Doubled Die, the next step is to determine if it is listed or not and if not, then submit the coin to Coneca for entry into the records.

I think a long time ago someone "found" some late 1950's DD on cents...grading Co.s graded them as DD's but then about a year after they found them they were proved to be machine doubling and worthless....I read this in a book and can't find the book right now....

You will get much better results if you start a new thread rather that piggy-backing on a 7-year-old thread.

Hobo is right, but for your 57-D, it looks like it is a die chip which is pretty common.
