It's plausible. :D Actually just curious. Especially as how he dates it minted during that siege.

    Jerusalem.

The siege on Masada, ca. 72-73, was not long afterward.

He does no such thing. His paperwork clearly states that it is referred to as the “Masada Coin” because so many of them were found there by the Romans after the siege. Not that they were struck at Masada, let alone during the siege.

You don’t have to call it “The Masada Coin” if you don’t want to. I probably won’t, though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find the historical anecdote to be interesting.

@philologus_1 - thank you. “Jerusalem” would have been my first guess, since it seems pretty obvious, but since I’m unschooled in these, I didn’t want to venture that guess.

I assumed from the insert he dated it. So I guess he just works there, he's like the floor-sweeper? I get you, I'm just J/K. Thanks.

Your “J/K” but apparently pedantic and snarky commentary was not terribly amusing nor useful… if that’s what’s going on.

He dated the coin to circa 67-68 AD. Is that not the case? What am I missing here?

I'm the one that's missing something. Not understanding the reason for your tone let alone the date reference. Any rate, you might put Jerusalem on the insert. He might want to know it, too, so long as he's selling these. Nice coin, BTW.

OK, good. Thanks. I was just having difficulty understanding your “I wouldn't think an expert would just assume they appeared out of Heaven” and “So I guess he just works there, he's like the floor-sweeper?” commentary, which had me scratching my head.

It sounded to me like you were saying Tom Wood claimed the coins were dated to and/or struck at the siege of Masada. (He did not.)

It also sounded like there was some yanking of chains going on.

If you really did just want to know where they were struck, that’s cool. Now we know, and I’m glad to have that information.

I still don’t really understand your other questions and commentary, but that’s no big deal.

Speaking of floor sweepers, when one of us dropped a coin under the table at the show, I had the random thought about what the actual floor sweepers at the Orange County Convention Center must find sometimes, when they clean up after a huge coin show like FUN.

At this point, reflecting, I can appreciate how you took it. I just didn't see it coming. Honestly. And if you don't believe that explanation, I can make up another one. :D

I enjoyed your reports, too, for what that's worth. Your first hat was better, though, I have to tell you. :)

We’re totally in agreement on that point.

But what can I say; times were lean in the Recession, and a hat covered in holey gold coins was a luxury I could no longer afford. :(

Minus Russia, the US is quite a bit larger than Europe. The distance from FL to NY is over 1,000 miles through some pretty busy highways.

Not bragging. Being stuck in the Midwest, many times I am envious of how much more compact Europe is, and your ability to more easily visit vastly different places than us. Besides my city, its a 5 hour drive to the nearest major city around here, and everything else is a plane ride. Thank goodness for the internet and mail systems.

I live only an hour or so’s drive from the nearest bigger cities (midway between Jacksonville, FL to the South and Savannah, GA to the North), but the area I live in is also a relative numismatic backwater.

I too rely upon the Internet and mailorder for 90+% of my collecting. Being able to hold a coin in hand and examine it before purchase, as I did at the show, is a bit of an exception to the rule for me.

I would not be the collector I am without the Internet. Neither in knowledge, nor in holdings.

Great purchase, @lordmarcovan — this type has always been one of my favorites.
