This piece is graded by PCGS as PF61. This coin has quite a few hairlines and if it were any other date it probably would have bagged... Not the prettiest girl at the dance... but it is the king of the Morgans.
Something has been done to it, BU. Either it was cleaned, or just scratched and damaged with hairlines. However, take a good look at it, as there aren't many of them around. THe 93s may be the alleged King, but this is the rarest Morgan of all.
Most of them went straight to collectors and fifty or so years ago everyone cleaned their coins. Those old wood coin cabinets imparted some pretty ugly toning on proofs back then. Remember they did not have anything like a cointain even back then. But I will say the strike on that coin is amazing the detail in the devices is very seldom seen in the business strike coins even those graded as high as MS67. Might be good learning for many on here to blow the images up to max and study the coin intently. Might keep one from buying a coin down the line from the wrong country.
Yeah this is definitely a good learning piece. The same seller has a 1792 half disme in PCGS VG 10 as well... It was a pretty neat day at the office today.
I hate it when they do that, it just isn't right. But the part that really gets to me, is that people accept it - they allow it to happen. As collectors and numismatists we should jump and down and scream our indignation. But instead, too many react with - Oh WOW ! It made 61 ! edit - Sorry Matt, it is not my intention to highjack your thread. But when I see such things, well, you know.
Hrm... well indeed it is an awesome coin, and very rare... But if that is a PF61 then I must be the next big lotto winner because it looks like someone took some steel wool to that thing~ Cleaned, harshly to say the least... That is ridiculous~
Yeah, at this point, so what if it has been cleaned. It is a unique coin, and with 880 minted, one of the great American rarities. PCGS obviously chose to slab it for its uniqueness, not its condition, which shows obvious damage to the naked eye. Would you slab an 1804 Silver Dollar if one was brought to you as a TPG? The way I look at it, despite the cleaning, it is an amazing coin, and absolutely spectacular. I'd gladly own it, no matter what the issues are. Congrats for just having it, and sharing it with us.
And for those that do not know the only other opinion then was a body bag for it there were no Genuine grades then.
Not in that slab. That slab was used from early 99 to Feb 2002. Still before they started the Genuine description. And it may have been slabbed earlier and then reholdered.
That is entirely possible. You know I defer to you on things like that. I was told by the seller that he had it holdered in the early 90's at least.
Don't think it matters that much. It is a Proof Morgan 1895 in a legit. PCGS holder. Great American Rarity, with or without hairline scratches, and gorgeous coin.
Well as I said, the coin is very nice. My problem is with the grade on the slab which regardless of when it was graded, is not correct. It is off so badly it would make we wonder if the correct coin wasn't pulled out, and another slipped in its place... If you truely feel it is a PF61 and wouldn't get labeled as "cleaned" etc., send it in for a regrade and see what it gets...
