103 Days of Lincoln Cents

Amen to that, BadThad. Here is a prime example of a 1970-S Lincoln Cent target toning inside the OGP. Interesting in this example the Quarter, Dime, and Nickel are exhibiting the same target toning pattern. I would not be surprised that if someone tested the black plastic insert if it had a trace amount of Sulfur content.

Anyway I am digressing on the 1970-S. We are onto 1971 already. Here is a crazy 1971-S Proof Lincoln that I bought for $11 off ebay. It was a raw coin that I didn't think would get a grade at PCGS -- so I submitted it to PCGS using the Secure Plus service so it could be sniffed for illegal chemicals. I was pleasantly surprised when this coin passed all of PCGS's tests and it came back as NT and/or Market Acceptible. PCGS gave this colorful monster a PR67RB grade.

In any case, this might be the most colorful PCGS-graded 1971-S Proof Lincoln that I have ever seen. The color was so interesting on this coin, that I had the PCGS TrueView group take three photos of it. The middle one is the one that is in the PCGS database as the "official version". It was actually a hard decision on which of the 3 photos to pick for the database.

What's the best way to describe this crazy color? Perhaps I should call it my "Salt Water Taffy" Lincoln Proof.

 

1971 - A TOUGH cent to find without various minting issues, dings and spots. These are generally pretty crappy. I tore threw 2 OBW rolls and didn't find anything that met my standards. Ben Peters did the work for me and sold me this nice one.

 

Here's an amazing find from an OBW roll....not sure if the grease is from the mint or from the coin roller, but this was in the middle of a sealed roll.

 

If that were dated a couple of years earlier it would be more in line with a Jerry Garcia psychedelic poster. Maybe a Jerry Garcia flashback.

Good old Ben would search through thousands of memorial cents to find just a few gems. I wish he was still around the forums. He sold me quite a few outstanding cents.....specifically, ones that I simply could not find anywhere no matter how long or how hard I looked. As I've said many times, I have roughly 3-4x the amount of time wrapped up in my memorial cents compared to my wheats. They are MUCH more difficult to find in higher grades raw! Dealers don't care about them and the OBW rolls and mint sets are full of garbage.

 

Good morning all. Todays's offerings are a NGC MS67RD 1972 obv and rev and a PCGS MS66+ RD 1972 Double Die Obv and rev. I still am not sure why the double die did not grade MS67. The little bit of chatter on Abe's coat is not enough to downgrade it and the rest of the coin looks pretty clean. It will due for now until I find an upgrade

Looks like the luster is ever so slightly muted on the doubled dies obverse...still looks like a 67 to me though.

 

Yes it is not bright and shiny. Still nice enough red wise and I debate trying to have it regraded or look for another example.

 

A regrade would likely be futile....good luck finding a 67 though.
