Today is the BIG DAY

Well todays the big day. NGC will start accepting certaincoins for the new BLACK retro ANNIVERSARY holder. Are you heading to postoffice to send some coins in? I’m thinking I’ll send in my 2008 rev of 2007ASE, well after second thought I will just leave it my Dansco.

No, its just not for me.

There are some older holders from various TPG's I think are cool for nostalgic purposes, but I'm not into modern variances that do nothing but change the color or picture of the slab-label. Besides, it does absolutely nothing for your coin.

 

Along the lines of "don't say anything if it isn't nice":

What a beautiful, wonderful idea! I just can't wait to get my coins back in those neat, hip, retro holders and show them around to friends and family! But will they put my gold coins in them? Think of the pride of ownership, and the warm fuzzy feeling you will get as you actually hold in your hands those new holders that everyone wants! I just may send in an express or walkthrough order so I can be the first in my club to own some!

 

NGC is trying to boost their revenue hoping that everyone will send in their ASEs at $30 a pop to get the new label. Like rodeoclown said, its all about marketing!

 

I think it's sort of like a tattoo. Af first, you think "Hey this is pretty cool." As time goes by you think "Why did I ever get this thing? I need to get rid of it."

 

Trying to delicately say what I am trying to say.....

So we already have "First Strike" or whatever the heck that even means making dramatic price differences in value for certain coins, of course a tiny numerical grade like 66 vs 65 or 70 vs 69 making huge differences, and now we have intentionally different colored holders people think will bring premiums, (and maybe they will).

So, um, what about the coin? In all of this HSN marketing hyperbole, where is anyone talking about the historical significance, cultural significance, economic significance of the little piece of metal? Kind of gets lost in the pretty holder, or the "rare" little number someone chose that day to assign to it huh?

Eh, I will continue to buy my old, crummy, circulated coins. I will have to somehow make due without the fancy plastic somehow.

 

I wasn't aware that this was happening. These aren't just another way to combat the growing number of knock-offs?

 

If you look at the only types of coins they're slabbing with these, (ASE's, AGE's and Platinum eagles and prez dollars) you can surmise that these series are probably starting to lag behind in submissions compared to previous years and they're trying to boost submissions. Also the black insert is not available for reholder, only first time grading.
Marketing.

 

Will they do population count for these , imagine the possibilities?

 

i`m tired of ngc`s marketing nonsense lately, how about some specials on grading fees and less cheesey labels and gimmicks?

 

To continue with Jason's line of thinking, how about trying to develop a slab that is less likely to scratch and nick as opposed to the brianiacs at the grading companies wasting our time and theirs with this superficial nonsense.

I don't have a lot of slabbed coins, but it would be nice if the plastic could be made more scratch-resistant.

 

Good point. Reminds me of the movie Idiocracy where to explain why science declined showed that instead of improving science education or cure cancer, they spent all of their time working on curing baldness and E.D.

Geez, Treehugger, don't you know you are supposed to have plastic tags to protect the plastic slab, so your First day of issue, first strike, rookie, black label, slab is still mint with mint plastic?

I called NGC a few years ago and ask them why they didn't offer black inserts.
They wouldn't give me the time of day.

I think it's a good idea for both sides, NGC makes money and the customer gets another option. No brainer.

I surely won't bash those who choose this path.

I like the black. I just wish they would slab other coins in them too.

 

They look like CoinWorld slabs that cost .50 cents each.
