Does the 2012S silver eagle certified PR69UC have upward value mobility?

Perhaps a bit, but with only a 69 grade, not much. The most sought after tend to be first strike / early release 70's.

Only if the price of silver goes up.

That's the reason I don't get any ASE slabbed. Your chance of getting a 70 is slim to none. The one's I do have slabbed are mostly gifts from folks.
Plus I like the way they look in my Dansco

There was a time when that was true, but it is not true any longer. The number of bullion coins, modern commems, and modern Proofs that are graded as 70's has increased exponentially in recent years. And to a more limited degree the same can even be said of some circulation coinage.

There have even been some examples where over 80% of submissions of a given coin were given the 70 grade.

Earlier today, I was providing some information to another person on a different site, and NGC has graded 261,028 in PF70, PF70CAM & PF70UCAM since the inception of the program in 1986.

But the vast majority of those 70 grades were given after 2003.

So, either technology and the mint are making more perfect coins or the people grading them are just not as picky or as good as they use to be with all these abundant amounts of 70s out there. ;)

If it was the mint, then only those coins minted after 2003 would get the 70 grades. But, the increase seen was across the board, regardless of when the coin was minted.

Small problem with that thinking - the people grading the coins have no idea who sent them in. The result - a single coin from the "little guy", is graded in exactly the same way as the thousand coins sent in by a dealer.

  16. Doug: I am not convinced that this is true. If PCGS graders come in Monday morning and see nothing (or little else) but ASEs all day or all week, they might likely deduce that a large dealer or dealers are sending them in. I can also imagine a scenario in which graders have lunch or get coffee with employees involved in shipping and receiving and they could talk about submissions. Someone on CT also pointed out a few years ago that HSN seemed to know exactly how may MS70 ASEs would be available prior to the actual release date of the coin. I have lost a lot of faith in the TPGs over the past several years. TC

I never had this faith. I don't need someone else slapping a grade on my coins so it makes me sleep better at night. ;)

Believe what you want, but I have known too many people that I know and trust who were graders, and they all say the same thing.

As for HSN, of course they know they'll get some 70's considering the number of coins they send in, and considering the high percentages that get 70's regardless of who sends them in. But know exactly how many, in advance ? Not in a million years would I ever believe that.
