1880 O Morgan. What does it grade?

Just got this guy back from NGC. What do you think it graded?

MS 65 PL? Looks it to me.

 

If NGC didn't take that hit on her neck to detract grade, I'd say 65/66, can't say about PL from the pics, but it wouldn't surprise me if designated PL.

Looks 65pl to me too.

 

It did look like a 66 at first glance. I think the reverse and that little neck ding brought it down to 65. Without testing for reflectivity, it is hard to be sure, but looks like deep mirrors to be PL.

 

Ok good.... I'm not the only one who thinks I got shafted... I think I have been a victim of market grading on this coin. If it was an 80 S it's an all day 65+/66. I'm not sure of you realize it but 80 O's are SUPER rare in 65+. Greysheet on a 65 is $25,000 and a 66 is $55,000. It's $1,600 in 64.

 

Nope... It's semi PL and really flashy.

I'm thinking it's gonna get walked through PCGS next!

 

I feel that it is accurately graded. Yes maybe it may earn a MS-64+ and if it were a "S" maybe a MS-65 however, I see too many marks in the fields (especially the reverse) as well as numerous small nicks on her cheek. Yes it is a very nice and overall clean coin but technically, I would agree with MS-64.

I would crack out and resubmit to PCGS as raw, and see what they say. No friggin way that is a 64... Ngc blew that call. I am we'll aware of the big jump in price, and think it is an easy 65.

 

That's definitely the current course of action.

 

I'm sorry, are we looking at the same coin here? Too many marks in the fields? I see a minor mark off her nose, and minute marks on the reverse fields, plus the ding on her neck, but that should be a 65 regardless of the mint mark.

 

I don't even consider it a marginal 65. It is a mid end 65 with possible PL fields. No way that the few hairlines on the reverse make that a 64. Perhaps " NFL replacement referees" graded that coin. You were robbed, just like Green Bay was last night.

 

That was kind of my thoughts as well. This coin is a SOLID 65. It has a great strike for an New Orleans. I will keep you posted... I'm off to liberate it from the NGC holder.

 

Why would you take it out of the holder you just paid to get

 

Because he plans on submitting it to PCGS and wants a fair shake from them on the grading. If he submitted it to PCGS in the NGC holder, which has NGC's grade on the label, PCGS might not give an unbiased opinion on the grade, or even the designation consideration.

Just an FYI, the difference in price for a PL 1880-O Morgan in 64 and 65 grade, according to numismedia.com is $28,470.

Without the PL designation, the difference between the two grades is $25,880.

Either way it is well worth paying the other service's submission fees to send it to them.

 

Because in my professional opinion this coin was not graded correctly. Most of the time I would just shrug it off but the difference in just 1 point of grade is more then $20,000.

 

Be interesting to see what PCGS says about it, and whether they will designate it too. :thumb:

I agree that NGC missed this one, and for this to be such a strong strike for a New Orleans Morgan too.
