Jeez.....WingedLiberty and Robec have a corner on the toned Memorial market.
They go on and on and every one is better than the one before - gorgeous Lincolns!

pumpkinpie what is this I don*t even

I am no expert, but I though SMS coins were business strikes? (Beautiful coins nonetheless)

Sort of but not really. If by "business" you mean for general circulation, then no. If you mean not proof, probably. It that sounds confusing, try this. NGC counts the 65 - 67 SMS coins as proofs in their registry, but counts the 2005 - 2010 SMS in their circulation issues. Don't feel bad about not understanding. I don't think NGC does either.

SMS Lincoln's were made from special polished dies. Not as mirror like as Proofs, but a huge (in most cases) improvement over business strikes. They range from a satiny surface to a true proof like surface. Business strikes as a whole don't exhibit this characteristic. Nor do business strikes have cameo surfaces that many SMS Lincoln's have.

I don't think what NGC does is confusing at all in terms of the inclusion in the registry sets. And, for the record, PCGS registry sets are the same regarding the 65-67 coins (proof sets) and 2005-2010 coins (circulation strike sets).

What I DO think is confusing
is why the term "SMS" was ever adopted for the 2005-2010 satin finish mint set coins by NGC. The coins from 65-67 were issued in place of proof sets. They were struck from specially polished dies and some (but certainly not most) exhibit cameo contrast of the devices from the fields. The 2005-2010 satin finish coins were the only coins available via US issued mint sets. Again, they were struck from specially prepared dies, but they have nothing to do with and are not comparable in any way to the 65-67 series bearing the same "SMS" moniker. PCGS is just as confused, as early on they graded the Satin Finish coins using the "MS" designation and a descriptive line "Satin Finish", and then later started using the "SP" designation. At least NGC has always graded the Satin Finish coins with the "MS" designation, and has simply noted on the holder "SMS". All in all, the release of a new satin mint-set finish in 2005 threw both of the TPGs for a loop, and they basically flew by the seat of their pants for a while.

MS67R - Just like Doug's above. Both are pictured in the NGC Encyclopedia for this year.
