Artificial toning vs. Natural toning: re-visited

The above couldn't be more wrong, IMO. To the contrary, the exact opposite is true (i.e. spotted coins tend to be natural, it's the "perfect" coins you have to worry about) in my experience (with more classic toners, not moderns).

    Respectfully...Mike

I just bought this coin on ebay. I was just wondering if you guys think its at or nt? And if it is worth sending it off to get graded? Also How much do you guys think its worth? Thank you all very much for your time! Jason

    Sorry - It's artificial toning.

Welcome to CoinTalk, where sometimes the news is good but more often times the news is bad. :p

C'mon Thad don't be so hard on him , I know you're kidding but we've all made mistakes . : ) It's if we learn from them that counts . These so called doctors prey on the new and inexperienced collector . Jason , we've all bought coins we wish we hadn't so just chalk it up to education . At least now you can learn the hallmarks of a NT coin . Though as said any vividly toned coin even in a top tpg slab has to be suspect to some degree . But at least you can learn what is market acceptable .

At least it is silver so you can dip it and start bright again, although some like them even if they are considered AT. Some consider from the artistic view, that AT and even AT+ Acrylic paint coins are expressionistic comments on "Money and the Arts". If one does it on common coins, and intends no fraud, its their coin, and should not be concerned. Art is "Right brain stuff" and Numismatics is "Left brain stuff". IMO

An older thread but still an opportunity. ;) Here's one of my favorite toner's in my collection and a good example of natural toning. Difficult to take good pics of but I tried a few months ago. :D I once had a twin for this coin but that coin was not as toned as this one and I sold it. One of my regrets!

AT all the way. Don't take this the wrong way but perhaps you should stick to PCGS & NGC graded coins until you are able to recognize AT on your own.

Did not take that wrong at all! You are right that would be the safe way for me. But I was talking about what the coin itself is really worth? The listing says its AT. I was just going to bid on it for the coin not the tone. And did not know how much the coin is worth? The AT makes it kinda hard to grade for me. Thanks again!!

I think Lehigh96 said it just right, get familiar with the colors and patterns that are common for the series and it becomes easier to spot AT coins. I love it even more when you buy a raw toner still in the packaging that is toning it.
