If you could go back in time and get any coin(s) or paper currency, where would you go and what would you bring back?
But you can buy those today, at least coins we have proven that were made for Jewish temple money in Jerusalem the year Judas was paid. I would go back and get coins from Central Asia and document who issued them. Even today there are a great many coins we have no idea who made them, and for what purpose. Filling in those answers would be my goal. If just for fun, I would go back and get some bright red chain cents.
The dollar that George Washington is said to have thrown across the Potomac, regardless of whether it actually happened.
70s would have probably been hard to find back then, its not even easy to find mint state coins in 70 today. I would go back to 1909 to pick up a roll of SVDBs
I would pick going to ancient rome. I would love to see the coins trading hands. I would also love to see the mint creating the coins, especially the engraving process. I would definitely bring back many Aureii *gold roman coins*. If possible, of various empresses I like. As well a caligula and some of the bigger name emperors.
Just after WWI, for the early Mercs, standing lib quarters and the liberty halves right out of the wooden drawer cash registers through to about 1925..
I would love to go back and see the some of the earliest minting of American coins. Probably take back a MS+++ 1817/4 cappped bust half.
Any US bank...1964. I would get as much silver coinage at face value that I could possibly afford. TC
I would go back and get 1 or 2 (or as many as I could) 1927D or 1933 St. Gaudens $20.00 pieces. Probably the 1927D because you could get it 6 years before the boom fell. This is assuming I am the only one going back in time. Oh, heck, if everyone is going back, I get the 5 1913 Liberty Head Nickels.
I'd go back to 1969 and NOT sell my collection (which I foolishly did to finance my first marriage... the two biggest mistakes of my life).
I myself would visit every year, starting with the first year the U.S. started making coins. I'd get as many rolls of coins and old currency as possible. Imagine being able to get as many St. Gaudens gold coins or Indian gold coins etc, as would allow? Blows my mind to think about it.
I'de go back to 1998 and buy as many Gold Eagle as I could. I'd also take a trip to Afghanistan and pay Bin Laden a visit.
That's funny, I like that one. What did you have in your collection? My mind's going wild thinking about what coins you had in 1969.
I'm interested too. Even if you did not have the coolest coins back then, I am sure some of them would be considered otherwise today.
