Hi all first post. Just wandering about a coin i found on the floor on my vacation to Russia. Its a 1899 Russian 10 Roubles Nicholas II, had it tested if it was gold and yes it is, worth anything?
:welcome: to CT Great Find ! i have found several offers in ebay around $ 500 so it's quite nice worthing - Froggy
Ye lol, this one coin just covered the whole price of the plane ticket and a little bit more. Need to be looking on the floor more
For anything definitive, however, pics of the coin are needed. Price varies widely based on grade. Also, judging by the circumstances in which you found it, it may be necessary to verify that it's real. I'm not familiar with these coins, I don't know if they're often faked or not, but most people wouldn't discard something like that. People might discard a reproduction.
If it is gold as the OP mentioned, it has as leat the bullion value Need to search the exact weight of this one
Found this : Mint name : Saint-Pétersbourg Mintage : 23.900.013 exemplaires Diameter in mm : 22,5 mm Die axis : 12 h. Metal : Or Legal weight : 8,6026 g. Fineness per thousand : 900°/oo Bullion Experts here can tell the current value for 8,6 g at 0.900 fine Should be nice
I weigh it and it nearly matches the weight that froggycoins specified, 2mg off but this is due to my cheap scale. I will have it looked at tomorrow by a personal friend (coin specialist). Here are pics, hopefully the quality is OK.
Low quality photos, and maybe its the angle/light, but the double headed eagle doesn't look right. If indeed real, it is worth melt.
I have read somewhere that in the XIXth century in Russia some fakes were made of platinum ( cheaper at this moment than gold) Would be great if it could be one of these , with a gold coating
Fakes can be bought in coin bazaars in many of the larger cities unfortunately. Even during USSR days it was possible to find fakes of these coins, I saw them even then.
if we take 56 USD/g for gold it should be close to 400, but i don't know the resell value, tax and so on in the US
