I should add that I do have a thing for coins with the Sun on them. Especially when the son is personified such as some bolivian and peruvian coinage.
Bad luck with European coins here, I was searching through my coins in order to find a coin depicting the sun or an allegory thereof, but.......there are not many and I realized I've absolutely no South American coins, so you can keep them coming I appreciate it. For you the only circulating coins somewhat related:
I collect the coins of Central America that have the friendly sun on them. Here are a couple 2 reales & a 1 real from Honduras & The Central American Republic. The last coin is a 1912 Nicaragua 1 cordoba.
I love the central A reales coins. I am looking for the right one in the 8R flavor to add to my box of 20. I passed on a 2R sold by an ATS members across the street that I will probably regret forever, though it was on ebay so who knows if my bid would have went.
I understand what it is like to loose a nice 2R. This CT thread describes the 2R that got sniped away from me on Ebay. http://www.cointalk.com/t146601/ Here are a couple 8R coins and neat 2R countermark on a cob.
I cant see the ebay listing now because its too old but im pretty sure we are talking about the same coin (Airplanenut's listing?). I would have paid more than what it sold for there but I couldnt at the time so I did not bid.
Yes, the reason for the Breslau address was what had happened to Napoleon's army in Russia. Then again, even the motto on the coin refers to the king's appeal (which was actually the appeal of some of his ministers rather than his own ) and not to any victory ... But the "perspective" is obvious - that Prussian commem was issued in 1913, with the 1815 victory in mind. And who knows, maybe a Waterloo Centennial coin would have been issued in 1915, except that Germany was at war with France again ... Christian
Well, the Greek coin with Alexander was a propaganda piece. The government even pre-dated it in order to keep Macedonia (aka FYROM) from using the sun or star of Vergina as its symbol. However, Macedonian coins have a stylized sun, see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0f/5_denari.jpg Also, the current French 10c, 20c and 50c coins have the Sower with a few sun rays http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/images/image8517.gif - based on Roty's original design but modernized. Links only, as I do not think of these two as "beautiful" coins. Christian
The Canadians have great designs on their coins, they are greatly underappreciated and make a good buy in my opinion. They are also the main reason for me to buy their older proof sets, with a relatively small added premium you get the proof coins, the dollar commems and a high quality presenting case in leather. That with the 100 Drachma was new to me. True, the older design was already posted some pages back, the newer ones..... well I've not yet truly arrived in the euro times. The nordic gold looks good freshly minted the problem is how it progresses, and the designs do their part keeping me uninterested. Today other mints are far ahead only the Austrians and perhaps some of the former Eastern countries deliver good surprises. (like the Australians)
Rescued from the melting pot, had been fingered pretty badly after rinsing and removing the fingerprints the coin shines again.
