Guess the 40%er

I'm going through one of my boxes this weekend and I was throwing the rejects into a coin lock bag. I'm edge searching them first and pitching them into the bag to sound check. I was not letting them drop into my hand like I normally do I was just speeding through the box because I thought it would be a skunk. I'm doing this outside in good light while my daughter is playing in the yard and she is trying to get my attention. I'm glad she did, she got me distracted and I started playing with the roll of coins in hand and dropping the coins on one another. You guessed it, I missed on the edge search but picked up the 40%er on the sound check. I pulled it to verify my ears were hearing it correctly then I put it back in the roll and took a picture for you all to guess where the 40%er is. I'm telling you in the light I was working in it was difficult to spot, I think the picture makes it a little easier. I'll let you guess and post the correct answer and a picture of the face of the coin tomorrow morning.
It again makes me start to wonder how many 40%ers I miss because of working with bad light and not sound checking like I should.

Seriously I found that I missed 3 40% halves that way last year, the bit of copper they had in them had toned darker and I mistook them for clads. I only noticed the first when I was looking at the dates and then I went back through the rejected ones and found a couple of more.

I don't do a large volume of halves, so I always date check after the quick edge check - especially after seeing posts like this!

Sound checking only takes a second more and has a nearly 100% success rate...

It's also how I've found my only magician's coin and only double-heads half.

Well, both of you who guessed where correct. I hope this encourages CRHer's to sound check also. Here's a pic of the coin, looks pretty good.

I look through 2000-3000 worth of halves everyweek and check every single date :p

That's brutal, I just don't have the time for that. I've got to turn them over quick otherwise I'll never make my pick-ups in time and I'd get back up quick. Are you looking for errors or just don't want to miss any silver? An edge check and a sound check should net you 99.99999% of silver that passes through your hands.

Not everyone who goes through coins from circulation is mining (at least not exclusively) for silver. I don't know about Heated Lime but some people enjoy looking for proofs, NIFC coins or otherwise older Mint BU clad coins. This is what collecting should be about but for many who search coins (especially halves), it is just a career in making profits and silver mining.

I pull proofs by edge checking and BU coins if I wished. Just the other week I pulled a Mount Rushmore/Buffalo commen by edge searching. Please don't pass judgements, you have no idea if I'm searching for silver, collectible coins, or both.

While I quoted your message, I was in no way specifically or personally referring to you but was referring to people such as this: http://www.cointalk.com/t10176-1502/#post1527875

His name is TimZim. Ya know, just because you disagree with people doesn't give you free reign to attack them. He might do extreme volume, but he's pulling down lots of silver, I can't blame him and I'm slightly jealous of his system he has going on. Wish I could run a setup like that.

I attack nobody and I love the double standard where it is said how characters like that are going to ruin CRH for the rest of us because of individuals like "TimZim" but when I bring attention to it I am some how the aggressor?

I found a magicians dime in a hollowed out cent in a bag of cents from the bank. It actually came apart when I dumped the bag out on the table.

I recently found something similar in a roll of dimes. It was a dime on one side and a cent on the other. The cent had been cut down to match the size of the dime. The thickness matches that of your standard dime and both sides are very well attached so there's really no easy way to separate them.

Face it, this hobby is gonna die sooner or later. It's a drain on the system, the banks, the suppliers, everybody. Get yours while you can.

Giddy up, I know there is only so much my banks will take, it's so small around here. I'm going to do as much as I can now because next year at this time, I expect to be loaning out my bank roll to others to search and get my return that way. Week after week, box after box that I drop off, it's going to old quick with these tellers.

I look for silver, NIFC, and proofs. I also just don't want to miss any silver coins. I've found a few coins that I would of missed otherwise if I didn't check all the dates.
