The most Handsom British Crown ever? This is the Gothic Crown from 1847 - often quoted as the most handsome British Crown ever produced. This example from my own collection.
totally agree paddy the gothic is always the favourite crown of all the UK collectors i know...........nice example as well mate
Here's one of my favorite coins of all time because I can just imagine some kid running around with a couple of these big honkers in their pocket or getting hit in the back of the head with one of these. Suckers are heavy. Anyways, I really like this two pence because it looks like the alloy mix was a bit incomplete, you can see the color difference and in hand it's even more evident.
In case (like me) you didn't know what a crown was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_(British_coin)
A few more nice Crowns - William and Mary 1692 I thought I would post a few more from my collection - just for your entertainment! This is a William and Mary Crown dated 1692. The 2 is blundered, which is a well know variation.
A few more nice Crowns - Queen Anne 1713 This is particularly handsome example of the 1713 Crown from the reign of Queen Anne. Interesting fact about Queen Anne - when she died she was so obese that they had to convert a piano case for a coffin!
A few more nice Crowns - George II 1751 This is an attractive 1751 crown - shame about the damage from a previous mount, but the best I could afford. I am always surprised that George II allowed such a bug-eyed portrait to be circulated!
A few more nice Crowns - George III Countermarked 8 Reales These are fascinating coins - Spanish 8 Reales coins from the New World, captured by the British and Countermarked with the bust of George III so they could be used as currency in Britain. This is the slightly more common oval mark - the octagonal mark is the rarer one. Scarcity of these is a combination of the countermark and the host coin. The Mexico mint 8 Reales is the commonest host, other New World mint cities are scarcer. There are even some countermarked French and American coins, which are probably the scarcest.
My only British Crown, 1902. Old Edward VII would make the antics of Harry look pretty benign in comparisson, paternity suits and everything. Though a king, Eddie was a real party boy.
