Yes, places being closed (or having limited opening hours) in August is somewhat common in France. ;) Whether the mint museum is still open or not - as I wrote, I'm not really sure. As for the locations, right, the Monnaie de Paris has two: in downtown Paris and in Pessac. The administration, designers and sales dept. are all in Paris, but Pessac is the only minting facility.

Maybe that was different a few years ago. Dov Zerah, for example, was director (PDG) of the mint until 2007. Since then Christophe Beaux has been the mint director.

Paris Closed Mint Building : a few informations

Christian is right, professional activity in France is close to Zero in August ( apart restaurant and the like :) )
Regarding Paris mint, i have checked on their website; actually they are closed from end of july till end of the year 2012 since they are making new arrangements in the building !
So we have to wait till beginning of 2013 for visiting them !

Personally I would say both French and Italian coins are some of my favorites. When gonig through piles of world coins, if I see France or Italy on the holder I just expect to see a beautiful design. If I see Germany or Japan I expect to see a solid design well made. :)

Thanks - that's a good news since I am planning another trip in the Spring next year. You and Christian are right - I did have an impression that the Frenches and Spaniards are too busy enjoying life in August - good for them ;-)

When i was in Bordeaux I couldn't even buy soap. I go to a quicky store and grab something that looks like Ivory soap. The casheir says to me, Monsour, in france we do not use that soap, we use the honey soap. I'm like, "shut UP and take my 5 euro note!".

Sorry to read that you have faced this terrible experience in Bordeaux ( hopefully you have been able to taste the wine )
By chance, you can also meet some kind people ( but they live hidden from the public places as greedy hoarders)
    Just kidding
