Because, every so often, like a couple days ago, I was in a local store, and they had the good ole "We need $1's and $5's" sign taped up by the cash register, and I told the cashier that "If you're having trouble with shortages of $1 and $5 bills, you should try using $2 bills as well" and the cashier just remarked "Yeah, that would be nice" I really think that, even though many people do not carry $2 bills, these stores, when low on $1 and $5 bills, they should put up a sign that says "We need $1's $2's and $5's" just in case someone like me comes along that carries $2 bills when I have them available, and even though I've never seen signs that said "We need quarters" I am going to offer halves to some of these stores if they want to try them, as well. Now, I "could" carry around maybe one roll of "dollar" coins instead, but that would help kill the half's circulation, however, many years ago, when I was in the same store chain, different building/location, years before the first Golden Dollar coins came out in 2000, I had some Susan B. Anthony Dollar coins, and I was in line and the cashier said "I ran out of $1 bills! Does anyone have any $1 bills?" and I said "I got some Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. Do you want those?" and the cashier immediately said, "Yes, please. Thank you" I'll bet it didn't make too many cutomers happy for a while since they had to accept Carter Quarters, instead of $1 bills for a while. But even though I was not in the front of the line when I gave the cashier the SBAs, no one really seemed to be complaining about them, who was ahead of me.

So anyway, I'm sure someone would want to carry one to four $2 bills and/or a couple halves instead of tons of quarters if the store ran out of $1 and $5 bills again.

The problem is that some people have no idea $2 bills and half dollar coins exist. What a shame =(

I spend half dollar and dollar coins all the time. Cashiers readily accept them. They have to look twice at the halves sometimes because they don't see them very often.

Half of the time I use Kennedy halves, the cashier calls over a manager to ask if it's ok to accept. Pretty sad.

Well, even though I am aware that I will NOT make a big difference, I could try to make a small one. And if I am enjoying what I am doing, and not hurting anyone, I see no problem in me doing it.

Just like, even though me and Fred are on totally opposite sides of the fence, as far as the way we think our coin and currency system should be, I won't bash Fred for trying to get dollar coins and $2 bills stamped with his "Golden Dollar promotional stamp" on them. However, I do believe that, since most Americans seem to love their $1 bills and pennies, and the government wants to save money, I think we should just go to polymer $1-$1,000 bills (adding a $200, $500, and $1,000 bill to the U.S. currency system to save on the amount of $100 bills printed each year, and pushing polymer $2 bills to circulate better to help the polymer $1 bills last even longer, and a redesigned smaller half to save on quarter production and reduce the need for quarters in certain vending machines), and make all U.S. coinage out of cheaper metals, just as Canada started doing.

All good ideas, unfortunately bureaucracy doesn't usually follow common sense.

Ha Ha! I have the same dang problem at times. Same with dollars such as Ikes SBAs and GDs of all kinds, and even $2 bills. Some people need to get out there and learn what kind of money we have circulating out there. Oh and get this. I once read a website where some teacher was complaining, wishing that they would get rid of halves, just so that she would not have to teach her students "by the half dollar" I'm guessing this means that she only wants to teach her students about pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, as she sounded like the type that would shun dollar coins and $2 bills, and would like them to be eliminated as well. Like a school teacher isn't paid enough to do their job.

And unfortunately, its the American people that must pay for these mistakes.

there are reasons we dont have 1000 bills or 5000 or 10,000 bills any more

What reasons? No, wait. DON'T tell me. Its that stupid drug dealer/tax eveader/counterfeiter/money launderer bull crap, right? Well, face it, no matter WHAT denominations are in circulation, we are NOT going to stop these crimes. As I have said, withdraw ALL denominations of coins and bills we have now, and reissue the half cent as our only circulating denomination of cold hard cash, and rgese crime lords would STILL find a way around it. I can gurantee that. Also, as I have said, and I will say it again, the Europeans have a 100 Euro note worth close to $200 U.S., a 200 Euro note worth close to $500 U.S. and a 500 Euro note worth close to $1,000 U.S. and they do not seem too concerned about these crimes, so, why should we Americans be worried? Oh, and you left out the $500 bill in your post.

I currently have about 12-13 $2's in my wallet. I spend them pretty often and I actually am seeing them more often than at anytime in the past. Yesterday I saw one in a donation box at my credit union. I know that waiters like getting them as tips in restaurants - beats $1 bills.

Yes, and it has nothing to do with drug dealers, tax evaders, etc. Large bills were often used in the past as monetary exchanges between banks, and that is about it. As most of us know today, it is done electronically, eliminating the need for such notes.

Back in the early 20th century most people never even saw large denomination notes - as you note they were mostly for inter-bank transactions. A few fabulously wealthy folks got them for show.

Nowadays some of us fools can entertain owning the things since their real spending value has plummeted dramatically over the past 75+ years:

    Agreed.

Just take in any $1 coin and use it for a purchase and watch the looks on the cashier's face.

Actually, the $1000 notes were available to the public, and many farmers in the town I grew up in carried them for use at the feed mill.

I really, really like $2 notes and the $1 coins. I'm going to get more the next time I'm at the bank. The $2 are BLAST to spend! I once spent about $100 in $2 notes on a purchase....the reaction from the guy taking the cash was PRICELESS! They are also great for leaving tips.
