Would anyone be able to tell me what the lowest graded 1960 Jefferson is? I found one CRH nickels a few weeks ago that is very worn and smooth. It's a pretty neat looknig coin. I'll have to get pics up sometime.
The lowball set idea has not caught on yet with Jefferson Nickels. The lowest NGC graded 1960 Jefferson Nickel is AU55.
VG-8 .... I respect this aspect of collecting (the 'low grade') but personally am not enthused by it. I mean were the Lions the craze when they had their perfect season (0-16?)
I just looked at the NGC populations for all Jefferson Nickels, here are the low end. Total:--97854 P/AG:--0 G:------5 VG:----27 F:------38
Actually, when I visited North Dakota for a conference and a field trip a few years ago, we spent one night at a casino. I am not a gambler, so I just played with the nickel slot machines - I was amazed how quickly modern coins were wearing down in that environment. In Canada, the pure nickel 25c coins at casinos wear preferentially on the rims, essentially removing the reeding. So, to throw it out there, would heavy casino use be considered natural circulation wear?? If so, then modern lowball coins are possible, without "cheating".
I was mostly kidding when I posted AW. Under your scenario, I would consider it natural wear. Still not sure why somebody would want that coin in their collection, but to each their own.
