Me and my father were going through his old coin collectionn that was passed down to him before I was even born and we came across a 1848 coin which looks like a typical One Cent coin but on the back it says "She Colt". I was wondering if someone could help me out on this? Im not sure if someone altered them or they came out this way, afterall they are old... Here are a few pictures. Thanks
Yep... someone changed the "ONE CENT" to "SHE COLT". Carving of coins was quite popular from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's.
Hobo nickels being some of the most popular of stylings when it comes to carvings and engravings. Interesting find!
Thanks guys. My dads side of the family are all from the mountains of Kentucky, and to this day have tons of horses, so it doesn't suprise me they would make one out to a horse haha. Thanks once again!
This is the first that I have ever seen with a post-Mint tooling for "SHE COLT". The more common alteration, at least in my experience, is to include a vulgar change on the reverse.
