Just had to vent a bit about a recent theft of some of my coin collection to those who know where I am coming from. I recently had a friend whom I had known for over 20 years stay with me while he was having marital issues. Monday I come home from work to find that not only was my gold wedding ring stolen by him, but also my entire complete MS set of Kennedy half dollars and complete set of Washington quarters from 1965 - present. Good thing he left the silver Franklins and silver quarters. I suppose that they looked too different and he wouldn't be able to get the drugs he is apparently hooked on. The worse part about this is not only have I lost the friendship of someone that I thought I could trust (was even his best man at his wedding), but now I have to go and buy everything again. Let me tell you, this whole situation is frustrating beyond belief. Thankfully he confessed to the crime and told me where he sold my ring at, so I was able to send the police there to try and get it. Currently in contact with them and the gold buying shop owner, but won't get the coins back.
Good thing I have the majority of my collection in a combination safe he couldn't get into. He left the complete set of Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, the entire penny collection (including flying eagle cents), and the Barber collections that I have. Guess he thought that he didn't want to deal with the "lowly" change with his drug dealer. Thanks for the replies though. It's good to vent a bit about it.
I'm sorry to hear about this. It's terrible what addiction drives people to do. I'm sure your friend didn't want to do that to you...but probably couldn't really help it. He clearly needs help.
You should be able to get your coins back provided you are pressing charges against your friend... they are stolen goods, the shop has no right to hold them.
My thoughts exactly. That's why I didn't hesitate to inform the police once I knew that I had to in order to get my ring back. He can rot in jail for all I care.
Sorry to hear about this mishap, clearly your friend needs help. And although what he did is inexcusable try to get him the help he needs, just don't let him in your house again.
That really bites. I went through a similar situation a couple of years ago with a female companion. Her little addiction cost me over $3,000 cash. Thankfully, it wasn't anything collectible. I learned two lessons.... keep valuables locked up and out of sight and dating women thirty years younger (regardless of how much fun it is), can be expensive.:yes:

My sympathies for both the loss of your coins and friend. I've been there. I had to ban my own brothers from my home for the same reasons, drugs and theft. My mother always wondered why, and was upset by it, but after their deaths, she finally could be told. I think she knew right along, but wouldn't admit it to herself.
