Thanks for the kick start, I was a little disappointed by the lack of enthusiasm that it created when I started it. But it wasn't wasted, I have become friend with three very nice collectors and I try to answer any questions that they may have. It has been fun hearing about their recent trip to the ANA show and I am a bit proud of the way one of them handles dealers. He has become quite savvy in getting coins at a bargain and even making a few bucks to expand his collection. His skills as a grader have become quite a bit better also.

Is it a lack of YNs, Mentors, or just all over interest? I think that this could be a great program if it would get the kickstart that it needs.

Hello fellow collectors! My 9 year old son, Preston, is a new (and very enthusiastic) collector. I was referred to this thread in hopes someone might want to mentor him. If there's any other information needed, please let me know!

I'm proud that I got to help KOEN twice and then his brother Herman with my last years "RedBook". I will always have a fond warm feeling in my heart for sharing with them.

Now reading this older thread, I should pick a new YM to help & mentor in some way. :thumb:

Just about everyone at CT is here to help (some more than others)

When Preston has a question or new acquisition he should post it in a new thread (in the proper section of CoinTalk). Most of the members here like to provide advice, answer questions and interact with coin related stuff. You can always send me a PM (private message) through CoinTalk but the best way to get assistance is to post a thread & include an accurate title that describes the subject.

Welcome to the CoinTalk forum. :welcome:

What you are describing is essentially how I began collecting. :hail:

Are you familiar with the albums supplied by Dansco? They have a classic type set album & they also make the same style album with plastic pages that hold 12 2x2 per page. The Dansco albums might provide a neat way for you to assemble all the types, extras, and duplicates as your collection grows.

I also use 1/2" 3-ring binders to hold coins. The 1/2" binder will hold 9 20-pocket pages for 2x2s or it will hold two Eagle 9-pocket slab pages.

Here are some photos depicting some of my Dansco books. Dansco makes several different types of pages for their albums. I began using the Dansco books because I thought they gave my collection a better look than the 3-rings. Also their 7070 album has a hole for each USA type coin from 1800 to date. The 7070 is a classic type set album that you will encounter frequently.

In general, Dansco books with sliding windows may not be the best way to keep proof coins and gem BU coins. The sliding plastic can scratch any coin including proof coins. However, I think that most collectors have been known to carefully place a couple proofs & gem BU coins in their Dansco albums with the sliding windows. I know that I have 3 or 4 proof coins in my Dansco type set album. It might be better to place an expensive proof coin in a 2x2 or PVC-free flip & then insert it into one of the Dansco 12-pocket pages.

Thank you for your contribution. Perhaps young Preston could use some help. From my understanding he is nine and wants it all (didn't we all?). Perhaps an old Redbook, random loose coins, extra supplies or something along those lines would really make his day. Just PM Prestonsmom for details. Please remember that this is voluntary and no money should ever be asked of the recipient. Thank you again for your kindness, you are helping another to enjoy our wonderful hobby.

Kirk, have you ever though about posting a list of all YNs participating, and what they are interested in. People that want to help could then just pick someone out and contact them.

I just stumbled across this thread. I think its a great idea and I'm going to email Rod Gillis in the ANA education department to see about setting up some sort of nationally-coordinated program of this type. I'm sure theres plenty of people willing to mentor (me included) and it doesn't have to be all about "free stuff". I think just having someone who knows coins to be able to talk to, ask questions and share stories with would be an awesome resource. I know I sure would have loved it when I first started!

Very nice, that is exactly what I am talking about. The original idea was that someone would help somebody else start a collection by maybe giving them a Whitman folder with a few wheat cents in it to spark their interest. I soon realized that their interest was already sparked or they wouldn't be members here. So it has become more of a mentoring role than a secret Santa. I do send the three members that I work with some coins here and there. But with education being the ultimate goal, I have given them all a copy of the PCGS guide to grading and counterfeit detection and try to answer any of their questions. Really, I have learned a few new things along the way by researching some of the question that they asked they asked. It has become a nice friendship.

I think Preston and I just need a lot of silly beginner questions answered :p

For instance: yesterday we went around to several banks and bought 2 rolls of pennies at each bank. Besides filling in his book (and hoarding all wheat pennies) are there any specific cents we should save? Is there a list of key date cents somewhere :)

Unless you are looking for small detail varieties (need a loupe/magnifying glass) then the redbook should give you enough info to figure out the key dates. Most circulated cents are good for exactly what you are doing, finding one from each year/mintmark.

Feel free to PM with questions if they don't get answered on the site. This site is great for answering questions and I doubt you will have to wait long.

I like the idea. Although I'm limited to what I can contribute in the educational department I believe that if we have an excessive amount of coins laying around that we should share with others.
