    Hello:

I have been searching rolls of coins for about fifteen months(only collecting for 22 months). Most days I get 5 rolls of quarters, 5 rolls of dimes, 5 rolls of nickels, and 10 rolls of pennies (initial investment of $90). It takes me about 3 hours or more to go thru all of the rolls. I have accumulated more than 3000 error coins thus far. Some days I only find a few errors, other days, I find much more. It is a really hit or miss situation, however, the days I hit, I find great stuff. I notice that every so often (especially these days) it seems a collector may be ridding themselves of coins they no longer want.

For example, about a week ago I got 10 rolls of pennies. Each and every roll had about 75% wheat pennies (none later than 1943 and many D & S's) about 15% Canadian coins and the rest just Memorial cents. I now inadvertently have a complete collection of Canadian pennies dated from 1920 thru 1954 and a number of later Canadian pennies. I have been able to put together 10 Jefferson nickel sets with all AU/BU "slider" coins that cost me face value (except the silver war nickels). I completed three sets of 1965 to date dimes. I retain any state quarters that I consider au/bu "sliders" and I have accumulated more than 20 sets of high quality state quarters. Half dollar coins are hard to come by, but once in a while I run into someone that has unloaded rolls of halves at the bank.

Probably the most important thing sI have learned by getting rolls of coins from banks is, 1. go to different brand banks, 2. get to know the tellers and tell them you look for coins (sometimes they will save coins for you), 3 mark all rolls you return, 4 do not go back to the same bank for several days.

I find silver coins on good days, mostly dimes, but occasionally a silver quarter. I also keep two error books in front of me when going thru rolls. Cherrypickers vol 1&2 and "Strike It Rich with Pocket Change. Although I have pretty much memorized many error coins in the books I still utilize the books for photo reference of errors.

One never knows what one will find. I have found a fake (high quality) two headed quarter and a fake (high quality) two headed nickel, plastic pennies, foreign coins etc. Oddly, I have not found any slugs. Also I would suggest you check all the rolls for the necessary number of coins. I have found pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters with fewer than the alotted amount. But if you squeeze the roll and compare the length of the rolls you can eliminate many "SHORT" rolls. The banks WILL NOT refund any "short" rolls.

It is possible to find high value error coins each and every day. Happy hunting folks.

Hi Merlin, it seems like you have developed a good strategy for coin hunting. I know a lot of people here, who are just searching for silver, don't bother checking for errors. I am interested, what are some of the better error coins you have found?

    First thing, welcome aboard.
Second, are you sure what you're calling errors are really errors? With your numbers, you'd think our mint is run by monkeys. You sure some might not just be minor varieties? Or MADs or something, or even PMD?
And third, how on earth have you put together 10 AU/BU Jefferson nickel sets? I've done 50-60 boxes of nickels and I've yet to find a 1950D, a 1938S, 1939D, or a 1939S. And the other semi-keys I've only found a very few examples of. I understand these are out there, folks have found them CRH. But you're telling me you've not only found all these semi-key dates, but you've found them in at least AU condition?

Brought $250 CWR dimes into the office today and had my coworker help out with my hobby. He seems to enjoy listening to some of my hunting stories. Altogether there were 3 clad CDN's and 3 silver roosies. I pulled a '54S and '63D. He was so excited to pull silver ('62D) that I let him keep it. Perhaps he'll start his own collection! Haven't been that lucky with CWR dimes before!

Merlin8971 has found rolls with a lot of wheats etc, and suspects a collector may be getting rid of stuff they don't want. If a collector is anything like me, they get rid of NOTHING, can't bear to spend even a 1958D cent.

There is another more likely possibility. Someone has a lot of old coins. A jar they have had for years perhaps. They die. relatives dealing with their stuff do not collect coins, just think of it as money, take it to the bank. This has happened to me, I have gotten a whole s***load of rolls of coins full of silver/old pennies/nickles on two occasions, once I know was after a death.

Anyway, nobody died today, as I had these results:
    $15 Dimes: Skunk
    $110 QUarters: Skunk.

Box of halves last night yielded 9X40%. I have found 90 40% this month and am hoping for 10 more to get 100 in one month. We have already had our best month so I guess I am being greedy. 8 more boxes to go this month.

    Good Luck everyone!!

I search mostly nickels and cents, but occasionally I do halves when I can find them. More recently it has been a few months without rain, maybe a dribble like yesterday I got a 1965 at my one credit union out of $20 searched. But when I took the remnants of the cents and nickels back to another credit union to run through their machine this morning and went to cash out my ticket the teller said they had a bunch of halves that the machine rejected yesterday. I asked how many, "$19, and we cannot figure out why the machine wouldn't take them" - well here is why:

38 40%ers. Now I have to go back tomorrow when they pull out the half bag out of the machine and buy it up.

So I paid $19 for $172 worth of silver. It was a great day, especially given that Lady Luck chose not to come with me when I went to the bank this morning.
