i just bought three 81 proof sets at my LCS in the bargin bin. they appear to be type 2 mm on them. going by this at least. note type 1 is stocky and oval with almost no serifs, type 2 is taller and has big rounded serifs. a clear field is not indicative of either. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/1979SAnd1981STypes.htm
do you mean the serifs or loops? if you mean loops, its the other way around. type 1 is squashed, type 2 is rounded and taller. the serifs on type 2 are bulbous and rounded. at least according to the link above.
Type 1 and Type 2 was regarding the SBA dollar, and not the other denominations in the 81 proofs. Both images of the SBA in post #1, do appear to be similar to the type 2 variety. You can compare yours, with images on this site: http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html
i ran back to my LCS and found two more at the bottom! 1 even has a type 2 sticker on it! 5 sets of type two with a dime rpm in each for $15. wtf, LCS owner?
Guess what? They all look like deep cams, numismedia.com starts the value for the type 2 DCAM PR61 at $132.50, and goes up to $1440 in PR70. Nice score from a bargain bin.:thumb:
