Copper dollars? I'd rather use the so-called "golden dollars" if we couldn't have paper.

Didn't happen in 1971 with the Eisenhower dollar. A repeat performance came and went in 1979 with the Anthony dollar. A reinvigorated effort was tried in 1999-2000 with the end of the Anthony dollar and the beginning of the Sacagawea dollar. The rise of Presidential dollars in 2007 led to packing the vaults full of coins unlike any time since the days of the Morgan dollar prior to 1904 until they were unloaded in the 1960s.

I would say, good luck with that.

Only the $1 and the $2 bills have yet to be made "counterfeit-proof", i.e. no blown up portraits of presidents. I would surely miss the old $1 bills....

Get rid of the dollar bill and the vaults will empty like magic.

Banks will be forced to actually distribute the coins so they can be used.

Good luck on that, last time noise was being made about dumping the dollar bill it ended up with the mint ceasing to coin circulation pres dollars, this time it may end up with the demise of sacagewea

Forget doing this so people can reject it or simply not use them. Sign into law to create dollar coins and simply just remove the paper dollar. Don't let people choose, just do it regardless. People will adapt. Sure there will be grumps out there about it, some will never get over it, but if you just do it and remove the actual problem (paper dollar which does cost more to produce and maintain), then people will have to use them. :D

I read somewhere that the average $1 bill only lasts a few months. If you stop producing them, the majority will disappear rather quickly and the public will be forced to use the coins.

Right you are Elijahhenry. If the goobers just did what our Canadian brethren did (back in the eighties?) the pubes (oh dear) would be forced to use the dollar coins languishing in the mint vaults........

People will get over it eventually, and that would be one way to cut down on govt spending. Killing 2 birds with one stone here!!

Quite frankly, I like walking around with a few dollar coins in my pocket. It means that I don't have to make a move for my wallet. Small dollar purchase equates to reaching for pocket change. I understand that many don't like to carry change in their pockets but I'm of a time when that's what we'd do. Still do, for this old boy.......:)

Why do we still have a paper dollar?
    Congress' lack of testicular fortitude!

I like carrying change in my pocket. It gives me something to play with when I'm bored, and I can make clicking noises to annoy people.

    Well said Rick! :)

They've absolutely none. And absolutely no regard to what needs to be done to really save some money here. Only special interests concerns to uphold......

Doesn't it only cost 6.7 cents to make a dollar bill and 30 cents to make a one dollar coin?

The Senators from Massachusetts, even though they are from different parties, will not allow it. The Craine Paper Company makes the dollar paper and they support their Congressmen.

Yeah, but with the dollar coin lasting thirty years or more, which is more cost effective?
