I think a lot of this is because of security. With $100,000.00+ inventory laying around, being open during the day when people are about is more secure than being open at night when few, if any, people are around. Plus, it's easier for a problem to occur when the owner can be seen through the window at night, and not the other way around. Even during the day, many B&M stoes have electronic locks where you must be seen before the door is opened.

Hey Naperville -- take a drive down to Ottawa, Illinois sometime. The guy at B&K Collectibles is nice and they are open 9-2 on Saturdays. Then hit up Starved Rock State Park since you dared to drive outside The Naper-Thrill. Its a win-win on a nice Saturday and only about 45 minutes from you.

The guy has plenty of American coins, but little in the way of foreign coins / all currency. He has 0 ancients. Cool store, though. Really old school.

Well, when I open my B&M, the hours will be 6:00AM to 10:00PM seven days a week. Yep, that's what they'll be...

I was just saying that a real business man will travel to his customer, especially if the transaction could be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Your gonna wait for that kinda business to just walk into your shop? I would think that would put you at a real disadvantage to your competition.

Not always, people like that actually do hire people to do such work for them. I'd say most coin dealers have at least 30-40k (guesstimate) in inventory at any given time, if someone makes that much money in an hour, we're talking Bill Gates type money and I doubt someone of that magnitude would spend the time to go make a deal worth just a few grand or just in the tens of thousands of dollar range. ;)

You are probably right but my thinking is that you would want to see the coins for yourself regardless of how much money you have and if anyone wants to forward me an application for such a position that would be excellent....:D

Why not contact that store and ask them if they sell at any local shows on weekends, and patronize them there.

My main dealer I do business with opens at 10A.M. M-F, except through the summer they are closed on Fridays, and Tuesdays they're open until 7P.M.

Winter hours they open at 10A.M. until 7P.M. M-F, and Saturdays 1-5. and closed the entire month of April for tax season, he's a licensed tax preparer.

I'm actually in Mt. Prospect now, and foreign is what I'm interested in, so there goes that idea. But thanks for the suggestion.

Actually my local dealer stopped being open on Saturday - now they are only 9 to 5:30 mon thru friday. The good news is I get every other Friday off and visit them every so often. The other local coin shop is useless to me, but they are open on Saturdays. Just a very small selection.

Do you realize how much crap the average (general inventory) B&M deals with? While I will not argue, nor excuse the attitude some dealers (all kinds) have, if you take the time to think about it, what you may see as being "snobbish" is nothing more than an acquired business sense.

A "real businessman"? Same here... do you realize the amount of nonsense the average dealer must put up with? For rather large transactions, traveling may not be an issue, but to generally imply that a dealer should travel in order to be a real businessman is ridiculous. Unless you've lived it, this may be hard to understand, but if a dealer ran to every potential customer they had, most of his/her life would be wasted on wild goose chases.

And do you realize the crap us buyers have to put up with? I was at a store for a first time visit the other day. The owner tells me he won't show me anything until I bring lots of money with me.

Snobbish? yes. Acquired business sense? I don't think so.

Yes.. I am well aware, and its NOTHING compared to what the average dealer does, especially B&M. Take the crap the dealer below gave you and multiply it by 25-50 (maybe more... every day), then tell me who gets the short end of the stick.

And that might be the problem... you "don't think so" (as in you are making an assumption), but do you KNOW so? Have you ever been on the other side of the table/counter? Unless you have, you've (probably) no idea of the nonsense some dealers must put up with day in and day out. Do you have any understanding of how ridiculous many collectors/buyers/private sellers really are today? Its probably safe to assume that this guy gets lots of lurkers.. people who think it okay for them to waste hours of his time then maybe spend a few dollars (if anything at all). It may be fun for a collector to spend hours browsing coins, but its not for the dealer catering to this and not making any money. While I cannot excuse his poor treatment of you, I can almost guarantee you that his acting like this is an acquired business sense. This is most likely not a hobby for him, so instead of jumping on the "snob" thing, try put yourself in his shoes. Had you made it very clear you were a serious, respectful buyer, his reaction may have been different. Even though it shouldn't be this way, showing the dealer first that you mean business and that you respect his/her time can go a long way towards having a positive experience.

BooksB4Coins- I'm not looking for an argument. I'm just stating what happened, I do know both sides of a dealer and buyer. Although I have not sold coins yet I have dealt with other collectibles. I know how it is, and I do respect both sides. No one is obligated to buy anything just because they walk into a store. Its fair when it goes both ways when a dealer goes shopping too.

I have seen some of the issues that our local owners have to deal with (I wouldn't want to deal with it). However, if you can't put that aside and show respect to new customers it is going to be very hard to be successful in the future. The buyer/looker also needs to be aware of their behavior and think if there is anything that is making the owner believe you are not a serious customer.

Asking "Dude, what is that gold one worth?" isn't going to help.
The kid riding by on his bike who stops and calls through the door "do you have any valuable coins?" is probably not going to buy anything either. (I have seen this) Sadly the owner didn't do anything to make the kid more interested in coins, he said no and turned away.

On the other hand if you show a little knowledge about what you are looking for they are more likely to take you seriously.
"do you have any old dollar coins" not very good
"do you have any peace or morgan dollars" a little better
"do you have any Carson City Morgan dollars, I am looking for AU/MS grades" more likely to get helped.
