I want to begin collecting MS- 65 red Lincolns. I also want them all graded. I want them all to be graded by the same company, and I am going to buy them already slabbed. So which company is the best? I love the way Pcgs slabs look, but I don't know if I want to pay $20 more for a 1958 lincoln just because its graded by them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
theres alot of 10k-30k dollar coins in that series at 65 red. so paying a few dollars more for pcgs slabs should be the least of your worries
Go for the MS66 RD, I picked this one up for $28 slabbed (sorry for the bad pictures i have no good lighting ) -Kyle
Ya I plan on taking a LONG time to complete this series, and I also plan to get the best deal I can for every single date. The 09 S VDB and 14D will be a couple stumbling blocks, so I'll be saving my pennies and dimes
Or you could always go for the MS66 RD Indians (a bit more $$$) (sorry for the bad pictures i have no good lighting ) -Kyle
Don't always look for the best 'deal', but look for the best condition. Say you had a choice between two coins, they were both graded a MS65, one looked on the lower end, almost looking like a MS64 and was priced at $20. The other looked like it was at the high end, almost looking like a MS66 for $30. Spend the extra $10 and buy the coin that looks basically a whole grade better then the other one, $10 will never kill you, plus you will have a coin that is much nicer looking and will be a lot easier to sell if that time ever comes around. -Kyle
It would be much cheaper to buy them raw, then have them graded. Of course, you need to know how to accurately grade and get a little lucky once in a while. But whichever way you decide to collect the Lincoln set, prepare yourself for a long term, expensive goal.
I might consider collecting ms 64 red indians. the only thing is with the lincoln series, they're are cheap dates that help you add on to the collection after a big purchase like the 09 S VDB. Indians are a lot cooler though!
Buy the best that you could afford, and what you will be happy with. I was going to buy 2 1922 NO D wheaties graded by PCGS VG8 and F12 except i didn't have enough money They said because i'm a kid they would give me a good price, it was almost $100 under the greysheet value!!!
Have you done your research? 09 s vdb is rather cheap compared to 24s, 24d,25s, all the s mint in the teens and twentys. the 1926-s is 100k alone
You couldn't even find all of them in 65RD. I have been searching for some more than 10 years. Of course some have come along. But all coins have eye appeal issues. If you did manage to do this, in just wheaties (1909 - 1958), you would have spent in excess of $300,000. The '26-S alone in 65RD is $100,000. Here are some budget busters: $6k for the S-VDB $3k for the '11-S $2.2k '12-D $5.2k '12-S $2.5k '13-D $6k '13-S $17k '14-D $10k '14-S $11.5k '15-S $3.7k '16-D $9k '16-S $3.2k '17-D $15k '17-S $4.2k '18-D $17.5k '18-S $2.6k '19-D $9k '19-S $2.5k '20-D $30k '20-S $12k '21-S $2.2k '22-D $22.5k '23-S $2.5k '24-D $4.6k '24-S $5.5k '25-D $22k '25-S $4.5 '26-D $100k '26-S $2.5k '27-D $10k '27-S $4.7k '28-S I didn't list the cheap ones under $2,000. PCGS is tougher on Lincolns than NGC. Not to start a war (please!) but it is just so. NGC can be tougher in other series.
I didn't realize that. I looked at the MS 63 prices (my redbook doesn't have 65 prices) and the 26S is only listed at $300. If they do go for 100K then I think I'll collect 63's instead. Most of them are $100-500 each in the 20's. I don't plan on buying the 22 no D, cause its listed at $30,000, but all the other prices look to be under $4000 in MS 63 red brown... I still need to consider a lot of things
this will give you a little more accurate guide on wheat prices http://www.pcgs.com/Prices/PriceGui...1&SP=1&c=46&title=Lincoln+Cent+(Wheat+Reverse)
Your real stumbling blocks will be the 1992 & 92 D CAMs and the 1988 D reverse 89. Only one MS64 is known to exist. And the 92 CAM recenlty sold for more than $20,000 at Heritage. I doubt you can even buy one of the 88D's, since CONECA only lists one MS64, 3 AU58+ and a single AU55. There are a number of the 09S VDB and 14Ds available for a price.
Now I'm thinking MS 63 red brown. Much less expensive overall than 65's; and they'll still have good color and eye appeal. Thanks to all who helped!
