I am sure someone will chime in soon but I don't believe this to be the peg leg variety. I thought it was on circulation strikes I'm not an expert on the series though

    cciesielski01: You are right.

JPAUL: It's normal to have peg leg design for 1976 Type 1. 1976 Type 2 have same design as other IKE years.

Technically, it's a pegleg but it's a pegleg by lettering design and "every" 1976-S 40% Silver Business Strike has the same pegleg R. Exactly like the 1972-S coins.

All the 1976 and 1976-D CnClad IKE's are also peglegs. (by design)

The rare pegleg, is the one that there just are not that many of, either by design or by die abrasion.

The 1971-S 40% Silver Business strike, as shown on page 393 of the 5th Edition of Volume II of the CPG, is one of those. There just are not that many around. Unfortunately, there are not as many collectors as there are coins though so the prices on the piece haven't gone through the roof.

There is a "straight leg" version of the above pegleg which PCGS also attributes as the faded pegleg and those submissions are co-mingled in with the total attributions. Some, even consider the straight leg version of the coin to be rarer than the faded version.

At any rate, knowing your "peglegs" is whats needed and if you look at enough Eisenhower Dollars, you'll figure it out soon enough.

This is a great thread.... I was hanging into a '76 Type I "peg leg" because I thought it was a variety. Oh well!
